Not one of Mark's most funky records – but a strong set with some unusual material, recorded with the accompaniment of David Braham on keyboards, Ted Curson on trumpet, and Gerry Niewood on tenor and flute. The highlights are the title track, Donald Fagan's "Maxine", and a good medley called "LA Song Cycle", which has Mark doing a version of the great track "LA Breakdown", always a favorite with us! (Cover has a name in marker and some wear. Labels have some marker.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Hip Parade
Capitol, 1960. Very Good+
A real turning point in the career of singer Mark Murphy – a great session for Capitol from 1960, done with creative arrangements from Bill Holman, and a sound that opens up strongly from Murphy's Decca years! In a way, the record is one of the first times that Murphy really got to do what ... LP, Vinyl record album
Muse, 1980. Very Good
Mark Murphy magic for Muse – a great little record that has the singer working in wonderfully warm company – a great group of players, and an assortment of excellent tunes! Gone For the Day
Capitol, 1957. Very Good
That's "gone" – as in the way June Christy really sends us – vocals that take us to a place that few other 50s singers could ever hope to reach! June's work here is a masterpiece of melancholic understatement – far less overblown than some of her pop contemporaries, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stolen Moments
Muse, 1978. Very Good-
One of his best for Muse, with a beautiful set of jazzy vocal grooves that includes his reading of "Stolen Moments" (later made famous by United Future Organization), plus "D.C. Farewell" and an excellent version of "Waters of March". Warm and breezy, with that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Keepin Me Satisfied
Muse, 1988. Near Mint-
Really lovely work from Michelle Hendricks – a set that's quite different than the work of her famous father Jon, but equally groovy in the end! Michelle's more of a direct vocalist than her dad – less inclined to vocalese, and more lyrically directed, but in a really wonderful way ... LP, Vinyl record album
Movin' Day
Janus, 1974. Very Good
Grady's most obscure album – and one that's got much more of a jazzy tip than his other ones. Richard Tee plays electric piano, and the band includes Billy Butler, George Coleman, and Ron Carter – all of whom do their best to keep things hip, and not fall into some of the schmaltzier ... Inner City, 1977. Very Good+
One of our favorite albums ever from Eddie Jefferson – one of the last sessions he ever recorded as a leader, and a stone cooker through and through! One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Latin Pulse
Epic, Mid 60s. Very Good
Nancy sings some sweet Latin groovers in Spanish – backed by groovy 60s arrangements from Joe Sherman! The feel here isn't quite as driving as on her classic "Mas Que Nada" album – but it does have a similar style – sort of blending easy 60s vocals with swinging pop ... LP, Vinyl record album
