Night & Day

CD (Item 637607) Afrasia, 1987 — Condition: Used
$9.99 ...

CD

Beautiful music from Carmen Lundy – her first album ever, and originally only issued in Japan! Right from the start, Lundy is one of the freshest, freest, most soulful jazz singers you'll ever hear – working here with a tight acoustic group that's in an instantly classic mode – quite different than the styles most other jazz singers were using in the mid 80s – a time when so many others were faltering, while Carmen was strong at the start! Musicians on the set are a very elite group – Ricky Ford on tenor, Rodney Jones on guitar, Kenny Kirkland on piano, and Curtis Lundy on bass – and songs are mostly familiar numbers, but opened up by Lundy with that undeniable talent she has for really transforming a tune. Titles include "Night & Day", "My Shining Hour", "Willow Weep For Me", "More Than You Know", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Everytime We Say Goodbye", "Easy To Love", and "My Old Flame".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Single Woman
Elektra, 1993. Used
A great later set from Nina Simone – quite sensitive at times, and with a different feel than some of her 70s work – but one that's still pure Simone all the way through! There's a return-to-classic feel going here – the sort of album that Jimmy Scott and others were making in ... CD

The title sounds a bit ambitious, but the album's actually a great intimate date from Carmen McRae – a beautifully-recorded small combo performance – caught live at Donte's in LA, with a sound that hearkens back to some of Carmen's best work of the 50s! The format is spare and simple ... CD

MCG Jazz, 2006. Used
A recent album by Nancy Wilson – but a really great one too, and a set that takes her back to the jazziest style of her roots! The record's a simple, unadorned affair – with smaller combo jazz backings on most numbers, arranged by John Wilson, Jay Ashby, and Llew Matthews – all ... CD

It's a bit too far into the 80s for Bobby to sound as great as he did on his earlier Capitol albums – with keyboards that are a bit stiff, and not enough acoustic playing next to the electric, in order to give the album a bit of heart. There's some decent enough numbers in a smooth jazz mode ... CD
