Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

From Me To You
Mack Avenue, 2002. Used
... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1964. Used
The Newborn Touch is always a great one, but it sounds especially nice on this record – a set that seems to go even farther than any of Phineas' earlier trio sessions! There's an almost-ambitious sound to the record that we really like a lot – one that possibly comes from Newborn's ... CD

Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars

Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars Vol 4 – Oboe/Flute
Contemporary/OJC, 1956. Used
Sheesh, Howard Rumsey sure knew how to stick his name on a lot of records! (He must have been trying to give Norman Granz and Leonard Feather a run for their money!) Fortunately, most of them were also great – like this one, which features flute duets between Bob Cooper and either Bud Shank ... CD

Phineas Newborn

Back Home
Contemporary/OJC, 1976. Used
Previously unreleased material recorded by Phineas Newborn for Contemporary Records – a set that has him ringing out the notes in ways that are almost earthier than in earlier years – sometimes bluesy, but other times with almost a more traditional approach to the keys! There's a ... CD

Curtis Counce

Sonority
Contemporary/OJC, 1956/1958. Used
Classic west coast soul jazz – recorded in 2 different sessions in the mid 50s, both under the leadership of bassist Curtis Counce, but not issued until 1989. The first bunch of tracks was recorded in 1956, and features Jack Sheldon, Harold Land, and Carl Perkins – on the tracks "S ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1956. Used
Charlie Mariano was one of the best things to ever happen to Shelly Manne – as the young altoist's icy talent was a perfect match for Manne's west coast cool, but his Boston soul really added a lot more emotional depth than had ever been previously recorded on some of Manne's sessions. This ... CD

Hampton Hawes

Here & Now
Contemporary/OJC, 1965. Used
Brilliant work from that hip 60s period when Hampton Hawes was really stretching out his sound – building on his already-great style of the 50s, by adding in more complex lines and unusual tones – creating far more depth in his music than ever before! In a way, there's a bit of a Bill ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1958. Used
Hard-burning early work from tenorist Harold Land – exactly the kind of date that set him apart from other west coast players of the 50s! Although he was part of the LA scene of the time, Harold Land grooved a lot harder and louder than his cool jazz contemporaries – and this album's a ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1957. Used
Red Norvo's dragged his vibes out into a field of wildflowers – and while we hate to think what that's done to the sound of his instrument (not to mention his hayfever), we can definitely say that the album's a groovy treat from the decade when Red was turning out some of his finest music ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1962. Used
Wonderfully romping work from Phineas Newborn – and a great showcase for the harder side of his sound on the piano, something that didn't always show up on his RCA albums of the 50s! The style here has plenty of bluesy overtones – not in a cliched soul jazz way, but in an earthy mode ... CD

Phineas Newborn

World Of Piano
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used
Maybe not a "world" of piano, but a real classic from Phineas Newborn – a record that marks a harder, more soulful sound than some of his 50s work – shaking free from some of his flowery touches on the keys, and digging much deeper into the groove of his Memphis roots! The ... CD

Pete La Roca Sims

Swingtime
Blue Note, 1997. Used
With Jimmy Owens on trumpet, Dave Liebman and Lance Bryant on soprano sax, Ricky Ford on tenor, and George Cables on piano! CD
