Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Terry Gibbs

Hootenanny My Way
Time/Solid (Japan), 1963. Used
A hip hootenanny from vibist Terry Gibbs – hardly the folksy set you might guess from the title, and instead a lively batch of small combo tunes that grooves better than most of Gibbs' work from the 60s! Most tracks are of traditional origin – folk tunes, if you will – but the ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1977. Used
A rather late recording for Pepper, but a great one played with some fierceness that you might not expect from the date of the recording. It helps that he's accompanied by a remarkable rhythm section of George Cables, George Mraz and Elvin Jones, all seasoned vets by this point, and playing with ... CD

Benny Carter

Jazz Giant
Contemporary/OJC, 1958. Used
With Ben Webster on tenor, Frank Rosolino on trombone, and Barney Kessel on guitar. Titles include "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me", "Blue Lou", "A Walkin Thing", and "Old Fashioned Love". CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used
An incredible record from Shelly Manne – one of his only dates recorded at The Manne Hole, even though it was his own club – and a killer live recording that was issued in a rare 2LP format for the time! The style here is similar to Manne's excellent recordings at the Blackhawk – ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1955. Used
A rare bit of mid 50s modernism from composer Lyle Murphy – one of the most angular talents on the west coast scene of the time, but an artist who also manages to swing with a nice little groove! On one hand, Murphy's got some key academic inspiration behind his music – as you might ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1960. Used
Classic hardbop from the west coast – a set of live recordings done at the Black Hawk jazz club in San Francisco at the end of the 50s, featuring Shelly Manne at the head of a group that includes the great Joe Gordon on trumpet! Tracks are longer, livelier, and have a lot more solo room and ... CD

Bobby Hutcherson

Solo/Quartet
Contemporary/OJC, 1981. Used
Bobby Hutcherson breaks it down in two different ways – solo on the first half of the record, and in a quartet on the rest! The set begins in a very spare way – Bobby playing vibes, marimba, xylophone, and bells – often a bit overdubbed, so that although alone, Hutcherson fills ... CD

Art Farmer

Ph D
Contemporary, 1989. Used
A great later date from trumpeter Art Farmer – who also plays flugelhorn here – recorded with the mighty Clifford Jordan on tenor, plus Kenny Burrell on guitar, James Williams on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Marvin Smitty Smith on drums! CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used
A really nice set from Shelly Manne! After having a bit of a minor hit with a crime jazz album dedicated to the music of Peter Gunn, Shelly and combo turn towards a less-remembered TV cop show for more music in a similar vein. Checkmate was a short-lived show from the early 60s, but it had a ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1956. Used
One of the few great records that alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano cut with Shelly Manne – and a heck of a wonderful record that really set a new tone for Shelly's groove at the time! Things here are a bit looser and freer than before – longer tracks with more room for solos to really ... CD

Pete La Roca Sims

Swingtime
Blue Note, 1997. Used
With Jimmy Owens on trumpet, Dave Liebman and Lance Bryant on soprano sax, Ricky Ford on tenor, and George Cables on piano! CD
