Bird & Other Golden Dancing Grooves

LP (Item 63267) Columbia, 1963 — Condition: Very Good+
Originally: 5.99
A killer bit of soul from The Dreamlovers – one of the rawest soul records on Columbia at the time! The group have a rough and ready harmony style that's more in keeping with some of the indie labels of the time – and the set's a nice batch of hard-edge dancefloor tracks with chunky midtempo grooves lots of nice jerky beats. Tracks include the group's hit "The Bird", plus versions of "The Slide", "Pony Time", "Limbo Rock", "Mashed Potato Time", "Let's Turkey Trot", "Black Bottom", and "South Street".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Columbia Special Products pressing – but still from the 60s.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bill Withers

Menagerie
Columbia, 1977. Very Good
One of Bill Withers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that has hip stepping off the acoustic sound of his Sussex records, into a warm and jazzy style that we like every bit as much as his earlier work! The album's got a wonderfully sophisticated jazzy vibe, and includes the excellent cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

Earth Wind & Fire

Spirit
Columbia, 1976. Very Good-
A big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul! Spirit is a perfect example of the way that Earth Wind & Fire could tighten things up, yet still keep them real – holding onto the deeply spiritual side that first made them great – but also focusing their ... LP, Vinyl record album

Manhattans

Greatest Hits
Columbia, 1980. Near Mint-
The Manhattans were one of those groups who knocked around for years in the indie soul world – cutting some fantastic material early on, but then losing direction for a number of years until they sprung forth as a huge act for Columbia during the early 70s. By that time, the band had more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Earth Wind & Fire

All 'N All
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
Genius, pure genius! It was hard for Earth, Wind & Fire to go wrong at this point – and the album's a stellar blend of jazz, funk, and soul, all done in that perfect style they'd hit by the mid 70s. And even though this one was a monster album, of the type that you see in everyone's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Deniece Williams

When Love Comes Calling
Columbia, 1979. Near Mint-
A seminal set in the career of Deniece Williams – a set that really helped her find the voice she'd use more strongly in the 80s, but one that still holds onto all the best strongly soul styles of her earlier work! There's a catchy bounce here that's quite compelling – but the overall ... LP, Vinyl record album

Luther Vandross

Busy Body
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint-
Classic 80s work from Luther Vandross – the kind of record that catapulted him from the soul music shadows into the major mainstream of the time! Aretha Franklin

Runnin' Out Of Fools
Columbia, 1964. Very Good-
The birth of Aretha Franklin's soulful sound – a real change from the jazzier sound of her first two albums for Columbia, and a set that really shows some great sides of her talents! Columbia, 1961. Very Good
A great early album from the young Aretha Franklin – a set that shows a very different trajectory in her sound, but a great one too! Tower Of Power

We Came To Play
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+
Tight funky work from Tower of Power – produced here by Steve Cropper, but sounding a lot more like Average White Band than on earlier albums – with a great mix of mainstream funk and warmer, mellow cuts! Chambers Brothers

New Time – A New Day
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+
This one has the Chambers working in a number of styles, sweating hard in a gritty version of Otis Redding's "I Can't Turn You Loose" and to some funky percussion and call-and-response vocals on "Do Your Thing", and grooving softly on "Guess Who" and others. Other ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Ruffin

Groove Governor
SOUL, 1970. Very Good
One of those Motown treasures that would have been a runaway hit, were it issued on a label with less going on – but which somehow got lost amidst the shuffle of all the other Motor City greatness of the time! Don't let obscurity make you think that Jimmy Ruffin's not giving his best, though ... LP, Vinyl record album
