Complete Recordings (Historic Jazz Concert At Music Inn/Modern Jazz Quartet At Music Inn/Third Stream Music)

CD (Item 632353) Atlantic/Lonehill (Spain), 1956/1957 — Condition: Used
$3.99 ...

CD

Originally: 5.99
The meeting of two key modern jazz talents in the late 50s third stream of jazz – heard on material pulled from three different Atlantic albums recorded at the Music Inn during 1956! The core of the set features the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre blowing alongside the Modern Jazz Quartet – in a spacious style that's very much in the spirit of Jimmy's own loosely-crafted groups of the time, and which makes surprisingly gentle use of piano, drums, and vibes next to his own gentle phrasing on clarinet. 2 of the 5 tracks with the MJQ add in Giuffre trio members Jim Hall and Ralph Pena – and titles for all include "A Fugue For Music Inn", "Serenade", "Fun",j "Da Capo", and "Fine". Added to these are 4 more titles that have Giuffre in the shifting company of other all-star players on tunes that take on a more traditional nature overall – longer jamming tracks that feature Rex Stewart, Pee Wee Russell, Teddy Charles, and Herbie Mann on titles that include "Blues In E Flat", "In A Mellotone", "The Quiet Time", and "Body & Soul". The last 3 tracks on the set return us to the Modern Jazz Quartet – working here on their own – on tracks that include "2 Degrees East 3 Degrees West", "Variation No 1 On God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Oh Bess Where's My Bess".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Chicago Piano Vol 1
Atlantic, 1951. Used
Bluesy piano, but with plenty of jazz roots too – vintage material recorded in Chicago during the early years of Atlantic Records, at a time when the label was almost more dedicated to preserving old styles than pushing new ones! Yancey's piano is sublime – recorded better here than on ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino/Jazz Heritage, 1955/1961. Used
A double-length set of work from one of the greatest pianists of the 50s – both of his Atlantic albums together on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Lennie Tristano, from 1955 – darkly imaginative work from the great Tristano – and one of the few full albums he ever cut as ... CD

Atlantic, 1985. Used
A stretched out performance from Ahmad Jamal – recorded with stunning acoustic brilliance at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1985, in a performance that alternates between long solo lines on the piano, and bolder passages with bass, drums, and percussion! There's a strength here that's easily ... CD

Jimmy Giuffre

Trav'lin' Light
Atlantic (Japan), 1958. Used
One of the most sublime Jimmy Giuffre albums of all time – and a perfect realization of his piano-less/bass-less trio style! The approach here is really revolutionary, especially for the time – as the group simply features Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Jim Hall on guitar, and Giuffre on ... CD
Atlantic/Essential (Spain), 1957. Used
Plenty plenty soul here – as Milt Jackson's moving away from the Modern Jazz Quartet, and working with a great group of players that really expand his sound! The session's a bit like some of Milt's soul jazz work for Riverside and other labels – in that it's got rhythms, timings, and ... CD

Rahsaan Roland Kirk & Al Hibbler/Ornette Coleman

Meeting Of The Times/Ornette!
Atlantic/Collectables, 1961/1972. Used
Certainly one of the strangest 2-fer CDs we've ever seen! The release pairs one of Rashaan Roland Kirk's later albums for Atlantic with a classic release by Ornette – and both of the records are quite different from each other. The Ornette's worth the price of the CD alone – as it ... CD

Hamiet Bluiett

Live At Carlos I
Just A Memory/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1996. Used
A really hard-burning live session – recorded in the 90s, but with all the bite and fire of some of the best Hamiet Bluiett sessions from the previous decade! There's a long-spun, spiritual vibe going on here – tracks that use familiar instrumentation, but really find a way to soar ... CD

Prestige, 1961. Used
One of the records that put a young Brother Jack McDuff on the map – and a perfect example of the rougher R&B roots that first emerged in his early work on the Hammond! The session's got a much more down-n-dirty feel than some of McDuff's tighter 60s quartet work – and offers a ... CD
