Big Band Bounce – Capitol Jazz Classics Vol 11

LP (Item 631908) Capitol, Mid 40s — Condition: Near Mint-
A side's worth of material from each of the band leaders with their orchestra! Benny Carter tracks feature sidemen that include Bumps Myers, Thelonious Monk, Max Roach, JJ Johnson, and Idrees Sulieman; and Cootie Williams tracks feature Bob Horton, Eddie Vinson, and Sam Taylor.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stan Kenton

Kenton In Hi-Fi
Capitol, 1956. Near Mint-
Easily the most successful album that Stan Kenton ever recorded – a brilliant reworking of older Kenton band standards, done with the dynamics of the 50s hi fi scene! The album's a much-needed one to any fan of Stan's genius – as the tunes are presented here in recordings that really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre

Jimmy Giuffre
Capitol, 1954. Very Good
Giuffre's first LP – and although not as completely sublime as his late 50s sides for Verve and Atlantic, still pretty incredible work from one of the freshest new voices in jazz at the time! The album takes tracks from an original 10" LP session, and adds in a few more – so that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Ellington 55
Capitol, 1955. Very Good+
One of Duke's most popular albums of the 50s – but we won't hold that against him! The session's one of a number of 50s outings that revisit older classics with the new level of quality offered in the studio – and it's got a similar feel to some of Duke's work for Bethlehem around the ... Coleman Hawkins

Gilded Hawk
Capitol, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Tremendous work from Coleman Hawkins – a sublime "with strings" session from the 50s, and one of Bean's greatest albums from the decade! The setting is quite different than other sets with Hawk on tenor – soft strings from Glen Osser, cascading beautifully and gently – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Howard Roberts

Color Him Funky
Capitol, 1963. Very Good
Sweet soul jazz from Howard Roberts! The record's one of Roberts' great early efforts for Capitol – recorded with a tight soul jazz group that includes Paul Bryant on organ, Chuck Berghofer on bass, and Earl Palmer on drums. As usual with Roberts, the interplay between guitar and organ is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Price You Got To Pay To Be Free
Capitol, 1970. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Fantastic work from the massive electric years of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of the group's last records to feature the keyboards of Joe Zawinul – and also one of the heaviest from the time! The set's a double-length gem that presents the group in an open live setting – ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Shearing

Shearing Bossa Nova
Capitol, 1962. Very Good
A heavenly album, and easily one of our favorite George Shearing records of the 60s – thanks to some sweet bossa arrangements by a young Clare Fischer! Fischer's got a better ear for this groove than just about anyone else – and he beautifully mixes light woodwinds with bossa rhythms ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol (Japan), 1966. Very Good+
A rare live set by Cannonball Adderley – unreleased in America at the time, and performed with the style of Cannon's best work for Riverside! The album's very similar to some of the group's best live sets for Riverside – like the San Francisco or other Tokyo recording – done with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Owens

Jimmy Owens
A&M, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Great stuff from trumpeter Jimmy Owens! Owens was always one of the hipper talents on his instrument during the 70s, and this A&M set features him in a nice groovy group that includes 2 guitars, and piano by Kenny Barron. The tracks are long, and offer Owens chance to open up amidst the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Mariano

Reflections (Catalyst)
Catalyst, 1974/1977. Very Good+
A great set of fusion tunes – recorded by American saxophonist Charlie Mariano, in the company of a very hip Finnish ensemble! This 1974 gem features some of Charlie's best work of the decade – freewheeling, but never too out, and with none of the rock flourishes that sometimes mar his ... LP, Vinyl record album
