Six Monk's Compositions

LP (Item 631427) Black Saint (Italy), 1987 — Condition: Used

A real treat – as Braxton plays work by Monk, blowing alto in a clean, clear, angular mode that echoes with a bit of Lacy, and shows some slight traces of Konitz as well. The group's a quartet – with Mal Waldon on piano, Bill Osborne on drums, and Buell Neidlinger making a surprising appearance on bass. Titles include "Brilliant Corners", "Played Twice", "Skippy", and "Ask Me Now". (Cover has a cutout notch, call letters in marker, a piece of masking tape, and index label. Labels have call letters in marker.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Five Pieces 1975
Arista, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Braxton's best records for Arista, and a great quartet session that features Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Dave Holland on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums. The playing is extremely tight, and Braxton and Wheeler trade very sharp solos, while Holland pulls these amazing lines out of his bass. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Arista/Freedom, 1977. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2LP set that brings together 3 different sets of live material recorded by Braxton during the mid 70s! Picadilly, 1971/1980. Sealed
Nice US issue of some great material recorded by Braxton in London during 1971! Side one features duets between Braxton and Chick Corea (back when they were still speaking to each other!) – and Braxton plays sopranino next to Corea's acoustic piano. Side two features one track that has ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1958. Good
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! Polydor, 1968. Very Good
Most likely our favorite album by John McLaughlin – and one that features him in a wonderfully spare setting – alongside John Surman on saxes, Brian Odges on bass, and Tony Oxley on drums. Riverside, 1956. Very Good+
One of the few records ever cut by this fantastic alto player from the mid 50s! Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-
A very appropriate title for a very cooking little album – one of Lee Morgan's first efforts as a leader, cut back during his first years of late 50s fame!
