Past Midnight

LP (Item 630528) MGM, 1960 — Condition: Near Mint-

A set of songs for "past midnight", not "round midnight" – as the liner notes are quick to point out – tunes that sound especially nice in the wee small hours of the evening, which may be the best time to dig the vocal talents of Margaret Whiting! For some reason, this record seems hipper than usual for Margaret – possibly because of the arrangements, which have a nice sort of west coast swing to them – jazzy, with modern touches, but never too intrusive – and free of any too-sentimental, or too-commercial styles. A few of the tracks are suprisingly upbeat – proving that Whiting's a lot more awake than we are way past midnight – and the occasional swinger really helps keep the album sounding fresh. Titles include "Just One Of Those Things", "By Myself", "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men", "At Long Last Love", and "Sing For Your Supper".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo pressing. Cover has a cutout hole and a very small scrape on front.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cool crossover pop from Margaret Whiting – a late 60s album that still draws strongly on her roots in jazz, but which also has Maggie trying on some younger styles too! The set isn't all 60s pop overall, but there's definitely a nice choice of tracks that goes way past the usual Margaret ... LP, Vinyl record album
