Charles Mingus caught live is a totally different experience from Mingus in the studio – as this crack album from 1964 will testify! The album features a stripped-down quartet that includes Clifford Jordan on tenor, Jane Getz on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums – plus a guest ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of Duke's last albums – and a great one! The session is right up there with some of Ellington's best late "suites" – an extended work that features writing around exotic themes, played by stalwarts like Paul Gonsalves, Harold Ashby, Rufus Jones, Cootie Williams, and Harry ... LP, Vinyl record album
Full funky work from the great Stanley Turrentine – an album that has him blowing beautifully over larger backings arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman! Claus is a bit more fluid here than usual – still using a fairly orchestral approach to the record, but also bringing in some of ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the best records ever by this unique bop trumpeter – and one that catches him with a strong comeback group that includes Chicagoans Ira Sullivan on trumpet and tenor, Vic Sproles on bass, and Norman Simmons on piano. Roy Haynes rounds out the group on drums – giving the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Seminal early work from Charles Mingus – a session that really shows him beginning to work in tightly arranged, deeply resonant styles – pushing much more deeply towards the brilliance of the late 50s! The set was originally issued on Debut, and was recorded with a great lineup that ... LP, Vinyl record album
A great little Latin session from Cal – recorded with extra percussion from Benny Velarde and Luis Miranda, plus rhythm from the Duran brothers, Manuel (piano) and Carlos (bass). The groove's nice and heavy, pretty driving on most cuts, a perfect foil for Cal's jazzy vibes. Titles include ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the hardest-jamming Return To Forever albums – recorded with the post-Brazilian lineup that includes Chick Corea on keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, Lenny White on percussion, and Al DiMeola on guitars. Corea's very firmly in the lead – stretching out in heavy keyboard romps ... LP, Vinyl record album
1979 session recorded in Stuttgart, and one that has the master African piano player in the company of a good quartet that features Talib Qadr on reeds and the occasional vocal. Dollar Brand sings a bit himself, and on part of the record, he also picks up a soprano saxophone, which he plays with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantastic small group work from tenorist Sal Nistico – and one of the few records that really finds a way to capture his genius! Sal got his start in the Woody Herman band of the 60s – and although a standout there, he really shines even more brightly here in a small group setting ... LP, Vinyl record album
A great little album that has McDuff soloing on Hammond, over larger funkier arrangements – very much in the manner of his sublime Moon Rapping set, also recorded for Blue Note. Arrangements are by JJ Jackson and Jerry Long – and McDuff will blow your mind as he navigates the mix of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Great stuff – and a beautiful album of spiritual jazz recorded by this obscure piano player who worked briefly with Jackie McLean in the seventies. Billy Gault had an amazingly soulful way of putting together his work, but never got bogged down in too much sentiment. There's some beautiful ... LP, Vinyl record album
