Memorial Album

LP (Item 630143) Xanadu, 1947/1950/1952/1965 — Condition: Near Mint-
Very early work from Sonny Criss – cut during his young years in the LA bop scene, featuring a number of different groups all dating from 1947 to 1965. Criss does a fine job, blowing effortlessly in a style that's clearly Bird-inspired, but which has a raspy genius of its own. Players include Hampton Hawes, Clark Terry, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, and Gil Barrios – and titles include "Blue N Boogie", "Ursula", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" with Damita Jo singing, "The Creep", "Blue Lou", "Body & Soul", "Out Of Nowhere", and "The Masquerade Is Over". 12 tracks in all.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Barry Harris

Live In Tokyo
Xanadu, 1976. Near Mint-
A great live set from pianist Barry Harris – material recorded on the same date that gave us the excellent Live In Tokyo album from reedman Charles McPherson – but done in a very different way that shows that Barry's clearly the leader on these tracks! The rhythm duo is wonderful ... LP, Vinyl record album
Xanadu, 1978. Very Good+
Barry Harris stretches out wonderfully in a set of compositions by Tadd Dameron – most of them familiar jazz standards from a few decades before, transformed magically by Harris in a hip 70s piano trio mode! The group here features Gene Taylor on bass and Leroy Williams on drums – both ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

ESP
Columbia, 1965. Very Good+
An album of dark and subtle beauty – and still one of our favorite Miles Davis albums of all time! The set's not as earth-shattering as some of Davis' other work of the 60s, but that's why we like it so much – because the emerging genius of the group with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, ... Ronnie Foster

Delight
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+
A definite delight from Ronnie Foster – a post-Blue Note set that actually has the keyboardist sounding better than ever! Ronnie's always been one of those guys who seems to work best when moving against a bit of structure – and here, that force is provided by the excellent Jerry ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Perfect Machine
Columbia, 1988. Very Good+
Herbie's still in electro-grooving mode here – not groundbreaking as earlier records, but still handled by Bill Laswell, and with a tackhead groove pretty firmly in place. The tracks are a bit more complicated than before, with vocals by Sugarfoot, and bass by Bootsy Collins. Titles include ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clifford Brown & Max Roach

Live At The Bee Hive
Columbia, 1955. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A rare slice of the career of this famous and short-lived jazz duo – tapes that were recorded in 1955 at the legendary Bee Hive niteclub in Chicago, but not issued until the end of the 70s, in this smashing 2LP set that was produced by Max himself! The material offers a strong contrast to ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, Late 40s. Very Good+
An 80s issue looking back on alternate takes of seminal bop material cut by Bird for Savoy. The recordings here are all of alternate versions of those originally released by Savoy on 10"s and 78s, and feature Parker alongside Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell and others. 16 ... Ralph Towner

Solstice
ECM, 1975. Very Good
Moody musings from guitarist Ralph Towner – recorded here on 12-string and classical guitar, plus a bit of piano – and working with a quartet that includes Jan Garbarek on sax and flute, Eberhard Weber on bass and cello, and Jon Christensen on drums and percussion. The group do a nice ... LP, Vinyl record album
Strand, 1959. Very Good+
An excellent 1959 session that was Slides first as a leader, and which featured Freddie Hubbard, Booker Little, and George Coleman on horns – as well as Pete LaRoca on drums! The format is in that tightly-controlled early Hampton mode – not really big band, but a small combo take on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tribe

Ethnic Stew
ABC, 1974. Very Good+
A great bit of funk from this obscure 70s combo – the first of their many good albums, and with a sound that's rougher and rawer than the others. The band's grooving in a pretty slow mode here – without the uptempo club tracks of later years – and they've got a style that's a mix ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+
A stunning live prison performance from the Man In Black, recorded in conjunction with a television special. Titles include "Starkville County Jail", "I Walk The Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", an incredible version of "Wanted Man", and what became the single ... LP, Vinyl record album
ZTT/Island, 1983. Very Good+
Fantastic stuff – and still sounding pretty fresh today! This is the first e.p. of tracks from Art of Noise, a groundbreaking set of sound collage tracks that mixes samples, beats, and dada instrumentation into a groove that definitely set the tone for the next 10 years.
