Live At The Public Theater

LP (Item 628366) Inner City, 1978 — Condition: Near Mint-
A beautiful live album from a time when saxophonist Bennie Wallace had a mighty nice edge – this raw, raspy quality that really shines through here – thanks to a stripped-down trio setting that features Eddie Gomez on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums! The album's a lot freer at times than some of the earlier tenor trio experiments – but Wallace can also change things up with effortless energy, and slide into a mellower, soulful ballad mode – something that Gomez is especially great at matching. If you only know some of Bennie's straighter work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the record will really prick up your ears to his talents – on titles that include "Blue Monk", "Head", "Broadside", and "In A Sentimental Mood".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sweeping Through The City
Enja (Germany), 1984. Near Mint-
A unique record from Bennie Wallace – one recorded with both a jazz group and gospel backing – all held together beautifully by the tenor in the lead! Sadao Watanabe with the Great Jazz Trio

I'm Old Fashioned
Inner City, 1976. Very Good+
A surprising title – given that Sadao Watanabe was really stretching out a lot in the early 70s – but a fitting one too, as the set's a nice back-to-basics date from the amazing Japanese saxophonist! Sadao's working here with the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Inner City, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sun Ra

Cosmos
Inner City, 1976. Sealed
One of the best-remembered Sun Ra albums from the 70s – a really cool little session that features Ra playing the unusual "rocksichord" all the way through! The instrument's a very weird one – kind of like a messed-up electric piano, with lots of cool broken notes and a weird ... LP, Vinyl record album

Toots Thielemans Live
Inner City, 1982. Near Mint-
A wonderful live date from the legendary Toots Thielemans – and one that's got some especially nice electric piano interplay with his famous guitar and harmonica! Three
Inner City, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Quite possibly one of the most successful Japanese piano trio recordings of the 70s – a super-session performed by a group that includes Joe Sample on acoustic piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums! Given that Sample's best known during the era for his electric keys with the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good+

Miles Davis

Water Babies
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint-
A much different album than you might expect from the cover – hardly the funky 70s set implied by the Big Fun-styled cover – and instead a lost slice of work from his groundbreaking late 60s years! The set was recorded in 1967, but unissued until Miles late 70s time away from the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Arista/Freedom, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Excellent Artista/Freedom reissue that brings together the full set from Cecil's 1962 performance at Cafe Monmartre. Mindblowing music from the great Don Cherry – quite a statement, given how much fantastic sounds Cherry had already given us by this point in his career!
