Amazing work from Art Farmer – and actually almost a completely different record than the album pictured on the cover! The material here was recorded in the same sessions as the Columbia album issued under the name The Time & The Place – but none of it was issued on vinyl back in the 60s, and only 3 of the tracks made a brief appearance on a 2LP set at the end of the 70s. But despite that obscurity, the whole thing's wonderful – a really sublime live performance by Art Farmer with one of his hippest groups ever – recorded at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York! The tracks are all quite long, with more room for soloing than most other Farmer records of the 60s – and in addition to Art's great work on flugelhorn, the group also features Jimmy Heath on tenor, Albert Dailey on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums – a killer lineup that keeps things hip throughout! Heath really adds a lot to the set – bringing in a sharper tone that's given plenty of space here to unfold – and Dailey's as great on this record as Cedar Walton was on the original album of the same name. Titles include "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "On The Trail", "Far Away Lands", "Dailey Bread", "Blue Bossa", "Is That So", and "The Time & The Place". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
