Way We Are (US pressing)

LP (Item 622042) MPS, 1974 — Condition: Very Good+
Funky and Latiny! Although we don't normally dig records by George Shearing, this cool 1974 session for MPS is a nice groover with a good 70's sound that adds a lot of tight rhythm to Shearing's often-sleepy playing – coming up with a whole new sound that has some really wonderful moments! The group's got Sigi Schwab on guitar, Heribert Tusek on vibes, and some additional congas and percussion by "The Amigos". These guys really drive the group – giving the record a great little kick that sounds funky, but in a subtle way that creates these really nice grooves with laidback piano and vibes over the top. Includes George's great funky cover of "Aquarius", plus "The World Is A Ghetto", "Alone Again (Naturally)", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", and "Superstar".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

George Shearing

Satin Brass
Capitol, 1958. Near Mint-
A perfect title for this lovely little gem from George Shearing – a set that mixes his familiar piano, vibes, and guitar with some bigger brass arrangements – yet all in a way that still shimmers with the sheen of satin! Shearing was smooth before anyone else could lay claim to the ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Shearing

Blue Chiffon
Capitol, 1958. Near Mint-
A record that's as dreamy as you'd expect from the title – and note that we said dreamy, and not sleepy – despite the horizontal stature of the model on the front! George Shearing's music always oddly excites us – it's gentle, sure – but there's always all these subtle ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS/BASF, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP
Long unreleased late 60s recordings from the home of producer/engineer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer finds Oscar Peterson in a glorious solo piano mode! All of the recordings in the series were from very relaxed, loose sessions that were some of Peterson's favorite of the time – and they're done ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jean Luc Ponty

Sunday Walk
MPS, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
A really beautiful early album from the legendary Jean-Luc Ponty – a set that's maybe more straight jazz than some of his later work, and which also represents a pivotal shift in the use of the violin in jazz! Ponty's phrasing here is very different than previous players who handled the ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS (Germany), Late 60s/1970s. Very Good+ 2LP
An excellent overview of the work of trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff – one of the most exciting talents on that instrument in the latter half of the 20th century, and a groundbreaking player who bridged the worlds of straight and avant jazz with incredible ease! The set features tunes pulled ... LP, Vinyl record album

German All Stars (Wolfgang Dauner, Albert Mangelsdorff, & Others)

German All Stars Live At The Domicile
MPS (Germany), 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
One of the best of the MPS 2LP live sets of the early 70s – featuring an all-star group that includes key German players of the time – like Wolfgang Dauner, Heinz Sauer, Albert Mangelsdorff, Manfred Schoof, Gunter Lenz, and Ack Van Rooyen! The sound of the record is fairly out – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don Sugarcane Harris

Fiddler On The Rock
MPS, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A tripped-out batch of funk rock tracks – one of the biggest crossover successes of the MPS lable! Don Harris sings and plays violin – and he gets some very heavy backing by a trio that includes Harvey Mandel on guitar, wailing away with those slow choppy riffs that made him the west ... MPS (Germany), 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
Very nice stuff from this legendary Austrian pianist! The album was recorded live at Berlin's Jazz Galerie in 1970, with some very hip backing by Jimmy Woode on bass and Billy Brooks on drums. The pair were one of MPS' most soulful rhythm sections, and they prove to be a great counterpoint here ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige/MPS, 1968. Very Good+
A well-titled set – in that it's got Oscar's piano in a fairly loose, soulfully relaxed setting with Sam Jones on bass and Bob Durham on drums. The album was recorded by MPS wizard Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer in his own home – and it's an excellent example of the label's scene at its ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar Peterson

Tristeza On Piano
MPS, 1970. Very Good+
A wonderful set of laidback tracks from Peterson – featuring a good mix of tunes from Brazilian sources, soundtracks, and a few nice 60s pop numbers. Albert Mangelsdorff/Ake Persson/Slide Hampton/Jiggs Whigam

Trombone Workshop
MPS (Germany), 1971. Very Good+
A great session that's waaaay more than the usual "lots of trombone and lots of noise" sessions these multi-trombone albums tend to be. Instead, this one's a meeting of 4 completely distinct talents on the instrument, and it's a brilliant attempt to reconcile their differences, and allow ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clarke Boland Big Band

All Blues
MPS (Germany), 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
An excellent Clarke Boland Big Band LP – very much in the spirit of the group's best work of the era – one that uses the blues of the title merely as springboard for their ebullient big band groove! The album featuring a stellar array of soloists, including Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib ... LP, Vinyl record album
