1969

LP (Item 6219) Skye, 1969 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold

One of Gabor Szabo's amazing late 60s albums for the Skye label – trippy, jazzy, and with a mod exotica vibe that would never be matched again! Gabor's playing guitar in a two-guitar frontline, which makes for lots of dreamy interplay between the strings – a shifting pattern of sound that's even more exotic than some of Szabo's earlier work on Impulse, thanks to added help from guitarist Francois Vaz. The rest of the group is great too – and features mighty Mike Melvoin on organ, plus fender bass, cello, and percussion – all produced by Gary McFarland with a wonderfully evocative feel! Titles include "Dear Prudence", "Stormy", "Walk Away Renee", "Michael From Mountains", "I've Just Seen A Face", and "You Won't See Me".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gabor Szabo

Dreams
Skye, 1968. Very Good- Gatefold
The guitar genius of Gabor Szabo – set to magnificent arrangements by Gary McFarland! The set's one of the most sophisticated albums Szabo ever cut – and has a slow-building style that steps off of his Impulse years with a deeper, broader vision of music. By the time of the set, ... Gabor Szabo

More Sorcery
Impulse, 1967. Very Good Gatefold
A great record that's sort of a follow-up to Gabor's excellent Sorcerer LP – and like that one, features long tracks that have a spiralling modal feel that's much more serious, much more grooving, and a lot less campish than some of his other albums of the time. The album features a two-guita ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

Nightflight
Mercury, 1976. Very Good
Wonderful 70s work from Gabor Szabo – a record that has him picking up a bit more of a soulful undercurrent, while still keeping all his great guitar work nicely upfront! The album has Gabor recording at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios – with help from Philly soul arrangers Richie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

Wind Sky & Diamonds
Impulse, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Excellent trippy pop-psychedelia from Gabor Szabo! The record's a bit less jazz than some of his other efforts, with more of that faked-out "eastern"production that you'd get on efforts like these – with occasional voices behind his guitar. Titles include "The End Of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bacchanal
Skye, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A wonderful album from Gabor Szabo – one with the same freely grooving, slightly-psychedelic sound that he was using on his best records for the Impulse label! Macho
Salvation, 1975. Very Good+
A nice session by one of the most unique guitarists in jazz – all done up in a CTI style, with production and arrangements by Bob James that give the record a nice little electric finish! Yusef Lateef

A Flat, G Flat, & C
Impulse, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Haunting set of stripped down tracks by the brilliant Yusef Lateef, who not only plays his usual assortment of reeds here – tenor, alto, flute, and oboe – but also lays down a bit of theremin! He's accompanied by Hugh Lawson on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Maiden Voyage
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bullitt
World Pacific, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Fantabuloso! Crusader Wilton Felder lays down a whole batch of groovy tracks, including the theme from the movie Bullitt. The whole album is very swingin and jazzy, but with as good of an edge as any Lalo Schifrin album from the time, and almost as great as the Bullitt soundtrack! Tracks include ... Done It Again
Pacific Jazz, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very very very groovy stuff by this masterful jazz vibist, recorded with a sort of late 60s swingin' feel – but still very much in the pocket and warm as a summer breeze! Lytle has a pretty remarkable way of playing the vibes with speed and energy, yet the overall feel still has kind of a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's last truly fantastic albums – a set that still has all the amazingly messed-up qualities of his best late 60s work – delivered with the honest heart and sense of soul that always make us love his music! The set was recorded for Atlantic in the early 70s, ... LP, Vinyl record album
