CD

✈
A beautiful late duo set from Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass – who'd worked together on a number of terrific sets in the 70s & 80s – always with an excellent, intuitive communication – which culminated in the lovely Easy Living in the early 80s! Here they work with material largely culled from the Broadway and film music canons – some of quite well known if not acknowledged standards, and others that are are little more obscure. A real late charmer from Ella & Joe! Includes "My Ship", "Don't Be That Way", "My Man", "Don't Worry 'Bout Me", "Easy Living", "Days Of WineAnd Roses", "I Want A Little Girl", "I'm Making Believe", "On A Slow Boat To China", "Love For Sale" and more. This remastered 2011 edition has 2 bonus tracks: "Don't Be That Way (Take 3, Alternate)" and "Love For Sale (Take 1, Alternate)".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Etta Jones

So Warm
Prestige/OJC, 1961. Used
Etta Jones is definitely nice and warm here – working with some great backings from Oliver Nelson, who mixes in a bit of strings with the usual jazzy punch he was delivering at the time! Jones' vocals are at the height of her early powers here – working with poise, class, and a heck of ... CD

Ella Fitzgerald with the Tommy Flanagan Trio

At The Montreux Jazz Festival 1977
Pablo/OJC, 1977. Used
Ella Fitzgerald swings it nicely with the Tommy Flanagan Trio – a small group on the date for backup, but one who give this Montreux performance almost as much bounce as Ella's 70s live dates with a bigger ensemble! Tommy seems to have a bit more punch in his piano than usual, and Fitzgerald ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used
Given what a freewheeling, open-minded, and lyrical jazz singer Mark Murphy is, it's hard to imagine him really loving "the blues" – and fortunately, most of that love is extended in the title, because the album itself is less of the blues effort that you might think. True, the ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1958. Used
Like many other 70s reissues in the Prestige/Milestone/fantasy family, this set compiles 2 early albums by Mose. Unlike a lot of his later material, this set's mostly instrumental, though he does get in some vocals on about a third of the tracks. The album features some great work by Allison's ... CD
Pablo (Japan), 1973. Used
One of the great Pablo Records efforts to revisit the jazz sound of the 50s – but in fresh new ways allowed by the freer recording modes of the 70s! The album features Ella Fitgerald and Joe Pass, plus nobody else – just voice and guitar coming together in quiet, introspective ways ... CD

Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass

Fitzgerald & Pass – Again
Pablo, 1976. Used
Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass return to the studio just a few years after their initial meeting – once again to work in a stripped-down duet format that's completely sublime! The spare setting is one that Ella never got in the older days – and there's an intimacy here that almost makes ... CD

Jimmy Witherspoon

Baby Baby Baby
Prestige/OJC, 1963. Used
Backings feature Kenny Burrell on guitar, Leo Wright on alto, and Gildo Mahones on piano! Titles include "Mean Old Frisco", "Rocks In My Bed", "Lonely Boy Blues", and "One Scotch One Bourbon One Beer". CD

Prestige/OJC, Late 50s. Used
Great early classics – including "Seventh Son", "Eyesight To The Blind", "Parchman Farm", and lots more! CD

Ella Fitzgearld

In Budapest
Pablo, 1970. Used
Ella Fitzgerald in Budapest – but swinging just as hard as on any of her other records from the time! The set's a later issue of an unreleased live date recorded in 1970 – a set that captures Fitzgerald right at the height of her international fame, at a time when she could captivate ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1962. Used
Hard to imagine Etta Jones being lonely and blue – especially when she sounds as great as this! The album's one of Jones' early classics from Prestige – a date that really has her classing things up a lot, and drawing on bits of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington's styles, to mix in ... CD

Helen Merrill

Dream Of You
EmArcy, 1956. Used
Dream Of You is one of Helen's best from the 50s, thanks to some great arrangements from Gil Evans! Evans' young and modern talents are a perfect fit for Helen's sadly icy vocals on the set – taking her to new places never reached on some other sessions that were trying for a warmer, sweeter ... CD
Fontana/Universal (Japan), 1967. Used
One of a handful of totally wonderful albums cut by Blossom Dearie in London – a gem of a set, and one that really takes off from the style of her earlier American albums on Verve, thanks to some hip Brit arrangements from Reg Guest! Blossom embraces all sorts of sounds here that she hadn't ... CD
