Lungs EP

LP (Item 619471) Ruthless, 1982 — Condition: Near Mint-
Steve Albini's early loner version of Big Black – ferocious, jagged metal bucket postpunk that holds up strongly to this day and is the blueprint for the full sensory onslaught to come! Albini recorded Lungs mostly on his own, save for his once and future pal Roland, of course, a little blurting sax from John Bohnen on one track and a little bit of additional howling vocals from Mark Hayes on another. Early Big Black is certainly Big Black. The strings sound like they are made of rusty razor wire and the drum machine sounds like it's powered by busting steam engine. The biggest differences from earlier to later Big Black is a rawer, self driven sound, and the recognizable influences, particularly Suicide, while the later stuff felt completely unprecedented. When we were younger, we didn't think Lungs compared to the later stuff, and with a little age and wisdom we see how dumb we were. Lungs is an excellent EP, and the blueprint of a blistering future to come in the Chicago rock underground. Titles include "Steelworker", "Live In A Hole", "Dead Billy", "I Can Be Killed", "The Crack" and "Rip".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert ... A definite freakout party from The Unfolding – a cool group that was possibly just a studio combo put together by Audio Fidelity for this rare 60s set – although we can more than forgive that fact, given the wild sound of the music! One of the wildest records of the early 70s – and it's still pretty darn hard to argue with the power of this one – even if the meddling of the producers are nearly as legendary as the album itself!
