Fantastic material from the late 60's period in which Eddie Harris was using his amazing tone, Atlantic's money, and the deep resources of the Chicago jazz scene to come up with some of the best recordings of his career. The four albums on this CD set – The In Sound, Mean Greens, Tender Storm, and Silver Cycles – blend soul jazz, groovy production, and larger concepts into a haunting melange of jazzy tracks that bring us joy time and time again – even though we've owned most of the albums for years! The whole thing's packaged together very nicely, and includes all the original cover art, plus new and old liner notes, and great sound. There's a far too much music on here to mention in great detail, but we're super-pleased to see something like this on the market – and to see this under-reissued side of Eddie's career finally get this kind of attention!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Vee Jay/Collectables, Mid 60s. Used
One of the true hit jazz albums of the 60s, and a record that's still pretty darn incredible today! Who'd have thought that a jazz recording of the theme to the film "Exodus" could have been such a hit? It was, and the way Eddie handled it forever transformed the face of jazz. Eddie ... CD

Ornette Coleman

Change Of The Century
Atlantic, Early 60s. Used
One of our favorite albums of all time from the legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman – an essential showcase for his early harmelodic concepts, but with a vibe that's maybe more pulsatingly rhythmic than on other albums from the time! Ornette plays his incredible plastic alto sax, which has ... CD

Von Freeman

Doin' It Right Now
Atlantic/Koch, 1972. Used
A classic "discovery" of tenor saxophonist Von Freeman – one that was already relatively late in his career, but a key appearance on Atlantic under the auspices of Roland Kirk! The setting here is as loose and laidback as Von needs to really do his thing – backing by a trio ... CD

This Is Our Music
Atlantic/Sepia Tone, Early 60s. Used
A landmark in modern jazz – from the stark stares of the band on the cover, to the starkly haunting music in the grooves! The record makes a bold statement right from the outset – and more than lives up to its promise in the sound within – an amazing approach to modern jazz that's ... CD
Atlantic, 1960/1966. Used
One of the more obscure John Coltrane albums for Atlantic – but a beautiful batch of spiritual numbers that really show him pushing towards the sound of A Love Supreme! The date on the album's 1966, but the material was recorded earlier – in that key turning point year of 1960, when ... CD

Angular Monk meets hard-driving Art Blakey – in a session that's quite unique, and which has gone onto become one of the best-remembered Atlantic jazz sessions of the late 50s! The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety ... CD

Koch/Atlantic, 1957. Used
A gem by Lee Konitz – one of his near-perfect 50s sessions for Atlantic! Lee's tone here is crisp, clear, and hauntingly fresh – modern, yet never academically so – and played with a dexterity that's incredible, but never too in love with itself to go too far. Key players on the ... CD
