Honkers & Screamers – The Roots Of Rock N Roll Vol 6

LP (Item 618445) Savoy, Late 40s/1954/1961 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
The cover says "roots of rock n roll" – but the set features some killer tenor work from Savoy Records – late 40s sides by Paul Williams, Hal Singer, and Big Jay McNeely – a 1954 date by Lee Allen – and obscure 1961 recordings by the great Sam Taylor!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cut corner and light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

John Coltrane & Wilbur Harden

Gold Coast
Savoy, 1958/1978. Very Good+
Incredible stuff from Coltrane – and some of his first really exciting work! The record features sides that Coltrane cut in a sextet with trumpeter Wilbur Harden in 1958 – a group that was really committed to opening up modal frontiers in jazz, and hitting a groove that was a bit more ... Donald Byrd & John Jenkins

Star Eyes (aka Jazz Eyes)
Savoy, Late 50s. Very Good+
A great little session – an oft-overlooked gem from Savoy's legendary hard bop years of the 50s – reissued many years later with an added bonus track! Altoist John Jenkins leads the session – which also features Donald Byrd – who gets co-billed as leader on this reissue, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk/Herbie Nichols

Thelonious Monk & Herbie Nichols
Savoy, 1952/1955. Near Mint-
The pair of great pianists don't play together – but are featured on a side apiece of the record, pulled from their Savoy recordings of the 50s. The album's most notable for the work of Nichols – some of the few sides he ever cut, and along with his two Blue Note LPs, and one for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Parker

One Night In Chicago
Savoy, 1950. Near Mint-
Quite possibly our favorite Charlie Parker album ever – and not just because we're from Chicago! The material is actually from a really great live set done in the Windy City in 1950 – one that's rougher and rawer than a lot of his studio sides, and which shows the incredible energy ... Classic Savoy bop work from Diz – featuring some sides cut with the orchestra of Johnny Richards, plus some cut with the "Bepop (sic) Boys", a group that includes Milt Jackson, James Moody, Hank Jones, Dave Burns, and John Brown. The Richards sides are great – a bit more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Farmer/Ernie Royal/Charlie Shavers/Emmet Berry/Harold Baker

Trumpets All Out (Savoy)
Savoy, Mid 50s. Very Good
As you might guess from the title, the album's an all-trumpet affair, one that features 5 different players on the instrument – Art Farmer, Emmet Berry, Charlie Shavers, Ernie Royal, and Harold Baker – supported by spare rhythm from the trio of Don Abney on piano, Wendell Marshall on ... Cecil Payne, Phil Woods, & Others

Bird's Night – The Music Of Charlie Parker
Savoy, 1957. Near Mint-
A really well done memorial to the (then) recently-departed Charlie Parker – cut with an unusual lineup that features Cecil Payne on baritone sax, Phil Woods on alto, and Frank Socolow on tenor – all working through long, laidback takes of 4 of Bird's best known compositions! There's a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hank Jones

Trio
Savoy, 1955. Very Good+
Rock-solid trio work from the Hank Jones group of the 50s – a combo that includes Hank on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! The group was the rhythm section on countless dates for Savoy Records at the time, but here they're featured strongly on their own – as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, 1957. Very Good+
One of a few albums cut in America by French 50s modernist Andre Hodeir – a set of compositions arranged and conducted by Hodeir himself, featuring American players that include Idrees Sulieman and Donald Byrd on trumpets, Hal McKusick on alto and bass clarinet, Bobby Jaspar on tenor and ... Stanley Turrentine

Hustlin'
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good
One of Stanley Turrentine's few organ-based sessions for Blue Note – recorded in the company of his wife Shirley Scott, a real cooker on the Hammond who holds it down masterfully here – and great band that's filled out by Kenny Burrell on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Otis Finch on ... Stan Kenton

Cuban Fire
Capitol, 1956. Very Good
One of Kenton's greatest records, and the one in which he proves his dedication to Latin styles, by serving up a killer batch of Afro-Cuban tracks with an incredibly authentic feel. The great Johnny Richards handled the arrangements, and the tracks are long and drawn out, with plenty of solo space ... LP, Vinyl record album
