We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Earthquake
MCA, 1974. Near Mint-
A great little soundtrack – maybe the best one that John Williams ever did (at least to our ears), and without the heavy approach of his work on big 70s sci-fi blockbusters! The film, as we're sure you know, depicts an all-star Earthquake event in LA – and in keeping with the slinky ... LP, Vinyl record album

MGM, 1973. Near Mint-
A great little movie – with a pretty nice little score! This early Michael Crichton film is quite similar, in overall pacing and theme, to Jurassic Park – but it's much schlockier, as you'd imagine from the time, and from the music on the disc, which is mostly fake "western" ... Ember (UK), 1964. Very Good
Zulu is pulled from a colonial period film that starred Michael Caine, and about half the score is straight orchestral scoring – dramatic music to set the mode of the narrative – but the other half are more African-sounding numbers, handled by Barry with a colonialist zeal! A surprisingly nice score from Riddle – and pretty different than most late 50s crime jazz LPs! There's a number of tracks on here that have a period setting, in keeping with the locale of the TV show – but there's others that are really wonderful orchestral numbers, shaded with the ... This one's got a bluesy jazz approach – set by Ray Charles' version of the title theme, and followed through by Lalo's great instrumental tracks – which mix strings, soul, and just the right jazzy touches to keep things moving along with a subtle groove. MGM goes for the Tower/Sidewalk approach – and turns out an album of shlock rock tunes designed to accompany this b-grade biker film from the early 70s! One of the best-ever Lalo Schifrin LPs! It's got a very cool organ-driven keyboard sound, tight jazzy arrangements, and a great set of themes like "Once a Thief", "The Cat", "The Man From Thrush", and "Blues a Go Go". Very swingin', very cool, and recorded ... LP, Vinyl record album

Great work from Earl Hagen – one of TV's better composers, as you'll hear from this tight set of tracks!
