Betty's got a smoother sound here than on some of her chunkier, funkier earlier records – but the approach is still a nice one – and we've gotta give Betty credit for pushing her sound into a whole new direction! The album follows nicely in the spirit of the live set issued a few years before – with some nice mellower moments, and a few more tracks that kick up the groove in a clubby approach to southern soul. We really like the spare "You're Just What I Need" and the bluesy "My Love Is" or the midtempo groove of "I Believe It's Love" – and other tracks include "The Child Of The Man", "Open The Door To Your Heart/Love Train", and "Thank You For The Many Things You've Done".  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Betty Wright Live
Alston/TK, 1978. Very Good
Betty's classic live recording from the mid 70's, and one of her best LPs from the time. She does a whole bunch of cool monologues and routines, many of which she's still using in her live sets today! Includes her 11 minute version of "Clean Up Woman", with impersonations of many famous ... LP, Vinyl record album

First Minute Of A New Day
Arista, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold
Gil Scott Heron's first album for Arista – very much in the mellow soul jazz work of his legendary album on Strata East! The record features some wonderfully moody jazz backing that really marks a shift in Gil's style – never going too far over the top, but hitting a sweet groove that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Groove Time, 1980. Good+
Uptempo funky stuff recorded for the obscure Groove Time label. There's a lot of funky keyboards on here (like mini moog, Clavinet, and Hammond B3), plus sax solos, and vocals on most cuts. Tracks include "Snake & The Worm", "Jungle Music", "LRJ Pop", "We ... LP, Vinyl record album
