Concert In Jazz

LP (Item 61657) Verve, 1961 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
Another of Mulligan's large Concert Jazz Band sides, with a large section of brass and reeds, mostly featuring Mulligan and trombonist Bob Brookmyer in the soloist's seat. The thing we've always dug about this group is that they move with the fluidity of a smaller ensemble, but like a middleweight fighter they still pack a heavy punch when the time comes. Six tunes: "All About Rosie", "Weep", "I Know, Don't Know How", 'Chuggin", "Summer's Over" and "Israel".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono MGM pressing with deep groove. Cover has a few small corner bumps and some gloss separation on the spine.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, 1960. Very Good+ Gatefold
A sweet little large group session from Gerry – a bit harder swinging than some of his mid 50s small group work, but still with that mellifluous glide that's the trademark Mulligan sound! Arrangements are by some great talents – including Al Cohn, Johnny Mandel, and Bob Brookmeyer, who ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Jeru
Columbia, 1962. Near Mint-
A pretty great little album – and very different than Gerry Mulligan's regular sides from the time! The session was originally produced as part of the sessions for the short-lived Jazztime label in the early 60s – and was produced by Dave Bailey with a soulful undercurrent that's quite ... Gerry Mulligan

Mainstream Of Jazz
EmArcy, 1956. Near Mint-
Gerry Mulligan's still far from the mainstream of jazz on this sweet little set – a great date that expands nicely from the mellower styles of the Pacific Jazz years – expanding the group a bit, with some really great results! In addition to Mulligan's usual baritone sax, Gerry also ... LP, Vinyl record album
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good
A strong 50s session from Gerry – a bit like some of his work for the Pacific Jazz label, but perhaps a bit more biting and modern. The group's a sextet with Jon Eardley on trumpet, Zoot Sims on tenor, Dave Bailey on drums, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, and Peck Morrison on bass – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1962. Very Good+
An understated gem from Gerry Mulligan – one of his first in a run of extremely charming sessions from the early 60s! The album has Gerry blowing in a format that's similar to 50s sides – a quartet with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Bill Crow on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1959. Near Mint-
(Mono Verve Records Inc pressing. NOTE – Vinyl is in great shape, but cover has split seams held with pieces of clear & red tape, wear and aging, small sticker and ink stamp in front, and tape remnants, large name in marker, ink stamps, and pen in back.) LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1958. Near Mint-
Gene Krupa and Gerry Mulligan – hardly a pairing that we would have thought of – but one that works surprisingly well here, and which showcases Mulligan's increasing fascination for larger group settings! The album features Gene on drums with a set of players that include Kai Winding, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Dynasty
Verve, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great lost album from Stan Getz! The record features Stan in a totally new setting, playing with some relatively unfamiliar French talents – Eddie Louiss on organ, Rene Thomas on guitar, and Bernard Lubat on drums. Louiss is incredible, and has a free spacey sound that recalls Larry Young ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hodges & Earl Fatha Hines

Stride Right
Verve, 1966. Very Good-
A great little trad session – one that features laidback and soulful work from the great Johnny Hodges – working here in a quintet that includes Earl "Fatha" Hines on piano and organ, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Richard Davis on bass, and Joe Marshall on drums. The style is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa

Burnin' Beat
Verve, 1962. Very Good
A drum-heavy spectacular that returns Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich to their big band roots – thanks to some hard-swinging arrangements from George Williams! The tracks are a bit shorter and done with a larger group than on some of the other Rich or Krupa sides for Verve – but there ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1957. Very Good+
A strange pairing – but that's sometimes what makes these Verve "pro meets pro" sets from the 50s so great. Getz and Johnson are backed by Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, and Connie Kay – and the tracks are longish, with plenty of solo room in the open jam session mode ...
