Chico

LP (Item 61648) India Navigation, 1977 — Condition: Very Good+
One of our favorite LPs from Chico, son of the great Von Freeman, and carrier of the torch of that great jazz family that included modernist drummer Bruz and leftfield funk jazz guitarist George. The group here includes Cecil McBee on bass, Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, Steve McCall on drums and Tito Sampo on percussion, and though the record references the AACM on the back, the playing has the less of the playful sensibilities many recordings from the AACM have and more of the searching spiritual quality of a post-Coltrane effort. The first side is a lengthy duet between Chico and bassist McBee, while the second side is the quintet recorded live, with some dynamic group interplay that recalls a Strata East type sound.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chico Freeman

Tradition In Transition
Elektra, 1982. Near Mint-
A well-titled set from Chico Freeman – as the reedman definitely takes older modern modes into new territory here – moving in almost Monk-ish space, but with some sharper, bolder tones overall! The album's a surprising one for an early 80s major label release – a great reminder ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cecil Taylor

Silent Tongues
Arista Freedom, 1974. Near Mint-
Beautiful free-flowing work by Cecil Taylor – and a key album to document his solo piano genius in the 70s! The album's an extended live performance, recorded at Montreux in 1974 – in an open, unbridled style that really shows the open spirit in Taylor's work at the time. The set ... Kenny Dorham

Trompeta Toccata
Blue Note, 1964. Near Mint-
A wonderfully free-thinking set by Kenny Dorham – and a record that really breaks from his earlier work! The album's not exactly experimental, but it features longer tracks with a looser approach than some of Dorham's sweeter shorter work – more in a rhythmically progressive mode that ... One of the greatest modern moments on Blue Note – ever! Columbia, 1980. Near Mint-
Wonderful sounds from Hubert Laws – and like some of his best CTI work of a few years before, a set that really goes way beyond any easy expectations! Cedar Walton

Cedar's Blues
Red (Italy), 1985. Near Mint-
A great summation of all the growth, talent, and creativity that Cedar Walton had hit by the 80s – a record that draws on both his trio work and his larger projects like the Eastern Rebellion quartet – done with a vibe that's somewhere in the best space of both! The group here is a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Funkadelic

Uncle Jam Wants You
Warner, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of our favorite Funkadelic albums ever – a tightly grooving classic that never lets up at all!
