Another stone winner from Rick James' early 80s run for Motown – a set that follows strongly on territory opened up by previous records – especially that bass-heavy approach to funk! The record's maybe not as stone classic as others, but still is way tighter and more put-together than most of the James imitators of the time – and features some nice moments that include the very groovy title cut, the mellow "Ebony Eyes" duet with Smokey Robinson, and even a guest appearance from Grandmaster Flash. Titles include "Cold Blooded", "Ebony Eyes", "Pimp The Simp", "U Bring The Freak Out", "Doin' It", "Unity" and "123 (U Her & Me)". (Cover has wear.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Coolin' Out
Gordy, 1985. Very Good
While not as sublime as Edwards' first solo LP, this second set from him is still a great set of mellow modern soul, with a very 80s approach to the production and arrangements. That said you know it's got a good bit of polish and some of the synth touches that are precisely that type of groove we ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sublime work from the Temptations – still recording here with Norman Whitfield, who's really opening up his bag on most of the record – and taking the group into expansive territory that was barely hinted at in their early work! Surface Thrills
Gordy, 1983. Near Mint-
An unusual set of 80s grooves from The Temptations – a record that still has the group at the top of their vocal powers, but which also changes up the sound of the rhythms a bit! There's more beats and keyboard lines than before – production that definitely shows the date of the record ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gordy, 1985. Near Mint-
Mid 80s magic from the Temptations – a record that shouldn't be as great as it is, given the lame title and cover image – but which still has the group working at a top level! A funky fusion classic from the 70s – totally great work from Chocolate Jam Company, a hip little group headed up by percussionist Leon Ndugu Chancler!
