While not as sublime as Edwards' first solo LP, this second set from him is still a great set of mellow modern soul, with a very 80s approach to the production and arrangements. That said you know it's got a good bit of polish and some of the synth touches that are precisely that type of groove we ... LP, Vinyl record album
The Temptations going in all directions – and all of them pretty darn groovy too! The set's still heavy on the solid, righteous sound of Norman Whitfield – who gives some of the best cuts that psychedelic soul imprint he really perfected with the group – a quality that has a lot ... An unusual set of 80s grooves from The Temptations – a record that still has the group at the top of their vocal powers, but which also changes up the sound of the rhythms a bit! There's more beats and keyboard lines than before – production that definitely shows the date of the record ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mid 80s magic from the Temptations – a record that shouldn't be as great as it is, given the lame title and cover image – but which still has the group working at a top level! There's a lot of strong generational interplay here between the talents of Otis Williams and Ali-Ollie Woodson ... LP, Vinyl record album
An all-star effort from The Temptations – and a well-titled set that has the group brimming over with classic vocal talent! The group's expanded to a seven-piece outfit for the album – with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin back in the fold, singing alongside Dennis Edwards, Otis ... LP, Vinyl record album
A mod soul classic from the great Edwin Starr – a set that bridges his years in the Detroit underground and his sudden rise to fame at Motown! The tracks here have a really deep basement grooving sort of vibe – catchy, but less poppy than the usual Motown – and more with the kind ... LP, Vinyl record album
Excellent jazzy soul stuff by one of our favorite singers of all time! Jon's in wonderful form here – working in arrangements that are a bit smoother and more modern soul oriented than his earlier work for RCA, but handled in such a way that they only bring out more richness in his ... An obscure little funky group from Detroit, one with a tight ensemble sound that's very much in the Earth Wind & Fire mode – complete with a really great horn section, plenty of bass-heavy grooves a the bottom, and a relatively spiritual feel that comes through strongly on the best tracks! ... LP, Vinyl record album
A tasty little album from Funkadelic – one that has Bootsy Collins joining the group, and really hitting the unique approach that would become the definitive P-Funk groove! And although tracks are shorter and even more focused, there's still a fair bit of guitar in the set – keeping ... LP, Vinyl record album
Essential female Philly soul recorded by the Jones Girls, a group who came to Philly later than many of their big 70s acts, but who went onto become possibly the best female act who recorded with Gamble & Huff. The record's a group effort of the Philly team – with arrangements by Gene ... LP, Vinyl record album
A funky fusion classic from the 70s – totally great work from Chocolate Jam Company, a hip little group headed up by percussionist Leon Ndugu Chancler! The core sound is soul, but there's plenty of fusion touches as well – thanks to a great lineup of players that includes Oscar ... LP, Vinyl record album
