Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Please Please Please
King, 1959. Very Good+
An incredible early album from James Brown – featuring 16 raw R&B tracks culled from his early years at King – and virtually the blueprint for so many other great things to follow! "Please Please Please" was James' first big hit – and as you probably already know, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ruby Wilson
Malaco, 1981. Very Good+
A great one from Ruby Wilson – a lesser-known soul singer from Texas, sounding great here in an early 80s set recorded at Malaco! Wilson's got this full, rich approach that's right up there with classic deep soul divas – and it's a perfect fit for the mix of modern and southern styles ... LP, Vinyl record album
Acappella
Straight, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
The title gets it right on this one, because The Persuasions sing all acappella – quite unique for soul music at such a time of heavy production! The group were a great throwback to an earlier era of vocal group harmony – and this album, recorded for Zappa's Straight label, gave them ... LP, Vinyl record album
On The Case
Chess, 1970. Sealed
A full-blown, very righteous offering from Chess to the political cause of Operation Breadbasket! Tenorist Ben Branch leads the large gospel-tinged group – and sax player Gene Barge produces and plays, with a style that's very much in the Chess/Checker bag of the late 60s soul era. Most ... United Artists, 1974. Very Good
A stone classic from Bobby Womack – one of those records that has all his best elements firmly in place, put forward at a level that's sophisticated and polished, yet never too commercial at all! Bobby's voices are still incredible – that raspy, personal feel that's rooted in country ... LP, Vinyl record album
Future Now
Fantasy, 1979. Very Good- Gatefold
A wonderful album from Pleasure – a group who were already great before, but who really seem to hit a great new level with this late 70s classic! Pleasure started out as a sweet jazz/funk combo with a great edge to their music – but by the time of this set, they'd actually gotten even ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pain
Westbound, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
Mindblowing funk from The Ohio Players – the group's debut album for Westbound Records, and a landmark batch of tracks that never gets old! The sound here really has the group stretching out a lot – working on tunes that are extended, but never as overindulgent as their labelmates ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atco, 1975. Near Mint-
Sublime work from Blue Magic – a record that still has them singing in the sweet harmony sound of earlier records, but which also picks up a fuller sound and a bit of a groove – thanks to stone Philly arrangements by Norman Harris and Ron "Have Mercy" Kersey! A number of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ain't It Funky
King, 1970. Very Good-
A killer from James Brown – and one of his best instrumental albums of the King years! The record has James working with the pre-JBs James Brown Band – a tight assemblage of players who really know how to craft an off-kilter groove. The guitar's popping on the beat here as much as the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Greatest Hits
Relic, Late 50s/1990. Near Mint-
Earl Lewis leads the Channels on this collection of 16 Doo-Wop songs from that late 50s. The tracks include their big hit "The Closer You Are" as well as other such as "Stars In The Sky", "The Girl Next Door", "That's My Desire", "All Alone", "I ... LP, Vinyl record album
Casanova
Collectables, 1967/Mid 80s. Very Good+ (reissue)
Great reissue of this excellent bit of Chicago female soul, performed by the great Ruby Andrews, and with arrangements by some of the best local talents in the city. Ruby sang with a voice that was pure deep soul, but she had arrangements that were in the best Chicago tradition of the time. The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Red Black & Green
Polydor, 1973. Very Good
Seminal early funk work from Roy Ayers! The record catches him at that perfect point when he was turning from a straight jazz player into a sinister force in 70s funk – and the group on the session includes super-hip soul jazz giants like Charles Tolliver, Sonny Fortune, and Harry Whitaker, ...
