❔

Basically the Groove Collective, with the absence of a few of their horn players and female vocalist Nicole Willis. Mining a vein that was very much in the bag of where the Heavies were during the mid 80s, this is jazzy modern soul with tight grooves, crisp production and a sense of history that never gets lost in a backwards retro mode. Ten songs including "Find Your Way", "It's A New Day", "Promise Me Nothing" and "If There's A Question".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the insert.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Monday Michiru

Mermaid
Polygram (Japan), 1998. Near Mint-
An EP release – but one that offers up a great standout moment in the career of Monday Michiru – and a record that has the power to knock away most other contemporary soul of the time! Monday's picking up a bit more of a clubby vibe than her earlier years – getting great help ... LP, Vinyl record album

Foreign Exchange

Leave It All Behind
Foreign Exchange, 2008. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
The second album from Foreign Exchange – the formerly bi-continental project of North Carolina MC and soul singer Phonte of Little Brother, and transplanted Dutch producer Nicolay – who take an even deeper turn into spacey soul on Leave It All Behind! Given that Phonte is singing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Deva Mahal

Run Deep
Motema, 2018. Sealed
The first full album from Deva Mahal – a relatively young singer, but one who comes across with a power that makes us think that she's been recording for years! Deva's definitely got a contemporary soul approach, but works with a rasp in her vocals that's a bit blues-influenced too – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stones Throw, 2018. Very Good+
The hype sticker on this one might say it all – "First album in 34 years, still sounds like '84" – and that's definitely the spirit here, as overlooked soul artist Prophet serves up a host of sweet 80s keyboards and grooves! He's not alone, though – as Mndsgn is on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Macy Gray

Id
Epic, 2001. Very Good
Macy Gray's steps to a higher level on The Id – this is no "sophomore slump" to our ears – actually a helluva lot better than her big selling debut! As on her first set, Macy's vocals are wonderful – totally unique, with that warm raspy soulful style that makes her one ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia Nights

In All Things
Record Breakin, 2016. Sealed
We waited years for the full length debut of Columbia Nights, and not only was it worth the wait, it's a stunner – a beautiful batch of timeless spacey soul! Leo Wright

Blues Shout
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good+
A beautiful record, and one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by alto player Leo Wright! At the time of the set, Wright was really making some excellent records with Lalo Schifrin and in Dizzy Gillespie's group (where they both were working at the time) – and this set is a perfect ... George Benson

It's Uptown
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+
George Benson's first LP for Columbia – a hard, heavy, soul jazz slammer that bears no resemblance to his overproduced work of the 70s! The album's a real cooker – recorded hot on the heels of Benson's classic work on Prestige with the Jack McDuff group, and sounding a lot like McDuff's ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Grits & Soul
Smash, 1964. Very Good+
One of the grooviest of the James Brown instrumental albums recorded for Smash. Unlike some of the other weaker albums on Smash, this one's got a great batch of material, most of which are originals, and not weak covers of pop tunes. Plus, the tracks are longer than usual, which gives the band a ... LP, Vinyl record album
