❔

The Newborn Touch is always a great one, but it sounds especially nice on this record – a set that seems to go even farther than any of Phineas' earlier trio sessions! There's an almost-ambitious sound to the record that we really like a lot – one that possibly comes from Newborn's choice of compositions for the set, a great bag of non-standard tunes from some of his west coast contemporaries – tracks penned by Ornette Coleman, Art Pepper, Hampton Hawes, Jimmy Woods, and others – some of which are decidedly more modern than the material that Newborn usually plays! There's a complexity here that's great – but one that still doesn't forget Newborn's down-home roots – and titles include "A Walkin Thing", "Be Deedle Dee Do", "The Blessing", "Diane", "Pazmuerte", "Hard To Find", and "Blue Daniel".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Contemporary/OJC, 1962. Used
Wonderfully romping work from Phineas Newborn – and a great showcase for the harder side of his sound on the piano, something that didn't always show up on his RCA albums of the 50s! The style here has plenty of bluesy overtones – not in a cliched soul jazz way, but in an earthy mode ... CD

Phineas Newborn

Back Home
Contemporary/OJC, 1976. Used
Previously unreleased material recorded by Phineas Newborn for Contemporary Records – a set that has him ringing out the notes in ways that are almost earthier than in earlier years – sometimes bluesy, but other times with almost a more traditional approach to the keys! There's a ... CD

Phineas Newborn

World Of Piano
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used
Maybe not a "world" of piano, but a real classic from Phineas Newborn – a record that marks a harder, more soulful sound than some of his 50s work – shaking free from some of his flowery touches on the keys, and digging much deeper into the groove of his Memphis roots! The ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1961. Used
Searing live work from Eric Dolphy – part of a series of recordings that set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! The record features Dolphy going even farther out than on his studio sides from the time – as the record features very long tracks performed by a crack group that ... CD

Bobby Timmons

Sweet & Soulful Sounds
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used
A wonderful mellow trio session from Bobby Timmons – done with a spare, relaxed approach that's a nice contrast to the recordings he was making for Prestige around the same time – but which still has the same deep, soulful approach to the piano that makes those records so great! Half a ... CD

Bobby Timmons

From The Bottom
Riverside/OJC, 1964. Used
Mellow trio material by Bobby, recorded in the final moments of the Riverside label in its first incarnation, but not issued until 1970, when ABC took over the label's holdings. The set's notable in that Bobby plays vibes on 2 tracks, and also performs an unaccompanied piano solo on another. ... CD

Red Garland

Dig It!
Prestige/OJC, Late 50s. Used
A nice, cooking bop side, led by Red Garland and featuring 'Trane at his late 50s best, when he was moving between playing with the top East coast talents of the day, and playing with a ferocity that betrayed the direction he'd later take when he got really out. Donald Byrd's also in the frontline ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1964. Used
Bad Bossa Nova is right – as Gene Ammons really hits a great groove here – one that's not exactly bossa, but which has lots of Latin and tropical touches! The session makes great use of 2 guitars at the same time – using that of Kenny Burrell for soulful rhythm, but also adding ... CD

Shirley Scott & Stanley Turrentine

Blue Flames
Prestige/OJC, 1964. Used
One of the real classics from the team of Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott – a session that kicks up Shirley's groove on Prestige a fair bit, by adding in some incredible tenor from then-husband Stan! Turrentine's tone at the time is wonderful – biting, well-placed, and always with ... CD

Together Again!
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used
Two of the best west coast boppers of the postwar years – back together again in a killer revival date cut by Contemporary Records! As the title implies, the set's got a backward-looking sort of feel – at least for the early 60s recording date – but from the perspective of our ... CD
