Chico Hamilton Special

LP (Item 61342) Columbia, 1960 — Condition: Very Good+
The quintet here is the group with a cellist, in this case Nate Gershman, plus guitar, bass and Charles Lloyd on flute and alto, who sounds particularly nice on this outing. As always, Chico's light dancing on the drums and sock cymbal gives the sides a wonderful swinging fee – with just the right amount of drive to keep things cooking but never overpowering the spacious approach of the quintet. Titles include "Don't Get Lost", "Autumn Leaves", "New Rhumba" and "Ladybird".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

His Great Hits
Impulse, Mid 60s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
The title's a bit misleading – as Chico really wasn't much of a hitmaker, at least as far as the charts go – but the album is a wonderful collection of his groundbreaking work for Impulse, killer tracks that are head and shoulders above any of his earlier work! At the time, Hamilton ... LP, Vinyl record album

South Pacific In Hi Fi
World Pacific, 1958. Very Good+
Chico and his group perform tunes from the Rodgers & Hammerstein score to South Pacific – a surprisingly good choice, actually, as the Rodgers & Hammerstein tunes have a great exotic bent to them, working well with the off-beat rhythms and melodies of the combo. Brubeck & Rushing
Columbia, 1960. Near Mint-
One of the coolest collaborations of Dave Brubeck's years at Columbia Records – and one of the greatest jazz sessions from vocalist Jimmy Rushing too!
