LP, Vinyl record album

Chico didn't cut too many sides for Epic – but there was a short period, between his stints with Pacific Jazz and Impulse were he did a few sessions with the label. The quintet here is the group with a cellist, in this case Nate Gershman, plus guitar, bass and Charles Lloyd on flute and alto, who sounds particularly nice on this outing. As always, Chico's light dancing on the drums and sock cymbal gives the sides a wonderful swinging fee – with just the right amount of drive to keep things cooking but never overpowering the spacious approach of the quintet. Titles include "Don't Get Lost", "Autumn Leaves", "New Rhumba" and "Ladybird". (CSP pressing.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chico Hamilton Trio
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Very Good
An interesting early album from Chico Hamilton – one that has him working in a trio format, quite different than the chamber modern work of his more famous quintet! The style is not dissimilar, though – as the trio lineup is drums, bass, and guitar – with both of the stringed ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gongs East!
Warner, 1958. Very Good
Quite possibly the best album to feature the talents of Chico Hamilton and Eric Dolphy – a set recorded at a time when Dolphy was an up-and-coming player on the west coast scene! Solid State, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
We used to pass up these later Chico Hamilton albums, but now we love them because they're so crazy and so off-kilter. Columbia, 1964. Very Good
One of those key cases where Miles Davis took a familiar song and made it his own! Columbia, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good
A great collection of Miles' classic work for Columbia – one that features a few really hard to find gems! To us, the highlight is 2 tracks – "Stella By Starlight" and "On Green Dolphin Street" – both of which are subtle modal gems lifted from Miles' rare Jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Exotic Mysteries
Columbia, 1978. Very Good
One of the fullest-sounding albums ever cut by Lonnie Liston Smith – but one of the greatest albums too! Presenting Burton Greene
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good
One of the biggest albums ever from pianist Burton Greene – a set that also features the great Byard Lancaster on alto and trumpet, and which mixes in some hip electronic harpsichord as well – all in a mode that's wonderfully trippy and spellbinding! Tracks include "Nirvana ... LP, Vinyl record album
