LP, Vinyl record album

A great little record from the days before George Benson had totally hit his smooth jazz sound of the 70s, and was being pushed by Columbia as a hard wailing soul jazz leader! The record features his classic quartet with Lonnie Smith on organ – grooving away hard hard hard, sometimes even harder than George! Benson's fresh off his work with the Jack McDuff quartet, and his style's nice and lean, with some good riffs, and a very tight approach to the strings. Titles include "The Cooker", "Benny's Back", "Bossa Rocka", and "Benson's Rider".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tenderly
Warner, 1989. Very Good+
A late 80s set from George Benson, but one with a relatively classic jazz feel – instrumentation that's mostly small combo, and which has Benson serving up a range of familiar jazz and standards! George plays guitar on some tracks, and also sings a bit on others – and the groups here ... LP, Vinyl record album
CTI, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet CTI grooving from George Benson – one of his hardest-hitting albums of the time! In a way, the record returns George to his early years at CTI – particularly the album Beyond The Blue Horizon – as the set's got a stripped down smaller group, working in a tight blend of ... Bad Benson
CTI, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy ... Canto Of Libra
Columbia (Japan), 1970. Very Good Gatefold
A really free-thinking set from the Toshiuki Miyama's New Herd – an album-long suite of 5 tracks entitled "Canto Of Libra" – penned by pianist Masahiko Satoh, who's also the lead soloist on the piece! The horn lines of the Herd are very criss-crossed here – stating ... LP, Vinyl record album
Rodney Franklin
Columbia, 1980. Very Good+
Tremendous work from Rodney Franklin – one of our favorite soulful fusion players from the end of the 70s! The album's a keyboard delight through and through – and Rodney plays both acoustic and electric piano, often on the same track – which creates this nicely expanded sound ... LP, Vinyl record album
Erotic Moods
Paul Winley, Early 70s/1978. Near Mint-
Wild and mysterious stuff! This album is sort of a repackaged version of the legendary Harlem Underground album – a great lost funk album from the mid-70s that listed George Benson as a player in the group, but one that Benson claims that he never played on! The time of this release ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tell It Like It Is
A&M/CTI, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
An early George Benson groover from the A&M years of CTI – a set that's quite different than his famous 70s sets, with a really unique sound overall! The arrangements here are by Latin Soul maestro Marty Sheller – who brings some of the vibe to the set that he brought to his 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album
Life Is Round
Columbia, 1973. Very Good
A classic album of spiritual fusion from this short-lived all-star group that included Harold Vick, Bob Moses, Jumma Santos, and Jack DeJohnette. One of Duke's standout sides for Columbia during the late 50s wealth of new recordings – a live set recorded at Miami's Bal Masque nightclub. Wicked late 70s work from Ronnie Foster – a rare Columbia outing that's arguably better than his earlier sides for Blue Note!
