❔
A beautiful little record from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – and although performed for a bigger label than some of their previous indie outings, the set may be one of the most dynamic the group ever recorded! Atlantic Records is clearly giving the group a lot of space here – as they're recording in Chicago, in a relatively free setting – able to stretch out and change things up with amazing energy – never just free jazz exploration, but a very rich, complicated, well-considered approach to their many layers of instrumentation and rhythm! Muhal Richard Abrams makes a great guest appearance on the record – adding in some wonderful piano passages – and the set includes the usual mix of reeds, percussion, and vocals – plus the beautiful bass work of Malachi Favors. Tracks include "Nonaah", "The Key", "Tnoona", and "Fanfare For The Warriors".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s pressing on Atlantic/Jazzlore.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, 1972. Very Good+
One of a few wonderful albums recorded by the Art Ensemble of Chicago with singer Fontella Bass – a vocalist who's best known to the world for her 60s soul hits, but who's coming out here as a tremendous force in modern jazz! Fontella's sound here is miles away from that of her work for ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Giant Steps
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good
A true giant step for John Coltrane – and one of the first albums to really showcase his talent as a writer – and his amazing ability for penning some of the most soulful, spiritual themes in jazz! Apart from the well-known title cut, the record's filled with other Coltrane classics ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good+
A great complement to the classic Atlantic albums by Coltrane – material recorded during the same stretch, but never issued at the time! The 1970 set features some undiscovered gems recorded with groups that include Milt Jackson, Hank Jones, Eric Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, and McCoy Tyner ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Early 1950s. Very Good
Very obscure work as a leader from altoist Johnny Hodges – a rare Atlantic 10" set, in contrast to the bulk of his postwar albums that came out on Verve! Other players include Harry Carney on baritone, Jimmy Jones and Billy Straihorn on piano, Lawrence Brown on trombone, and Joe Thomas ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shelly Manne & His Men

Jazz Gunn
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
Shelly Manne scored big with a jazz version of the Peter Gunn soundtrack in the 50s – and he does it again in this 60s version of Henry Mancini's music for the full-length Gunn movie! The style here is a bit more far-reaching and looser than before – showing not just Manne's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre

Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good-
Beautiful work from Jimmy Giuffre – and a key album in the development of his spare sound of the late 50s! The record features Jimmy on clarinet – as you'd guess by the title – but this is no hokey set of Benny Goodman or Buddy DeFranco-type tunes. Instead, Giuffre's using the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Today!
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint-
The sound of today, circa 1966 – served up by flute man Herbie Mann, who was always at the forefront of music at the time! Herbie's great lead lines are set up nicely in arrangements from Oliver Nelson – those cool, groovy, super-swinging styles that Nelson could hit so perfectly at ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good
Herbie Mann got a standing ovation for this performance – at least if the title is to be believed – and considering the grooves on the set, it was all for very good reason! The album's one of the few to feature Mann in the company of pianist Chick Corea – who steps out here with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Best Of Ornette Coleman
Atlantic, 1960s. Near Mint-
It's hard to even begin to hint at Ornette's greatness on Atlantic – but this set does a pretty darn nice job! Tracks are all from the years 1959 to 1961, and perfectly rhythmic, in that modal mode of the classic years. Titles include "Una Muy Bonita", "Lonely Woman", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles & Milt Jackson

Soul Meeting
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Fairly decent jazz session, and one in which Ray plays alto sax and electric piano, along with his usual acoustic piano. Milt Jackson is on vibes, of course, and the rest of the group includes Kenny Burrell, Percy Heath, and Art Taylor. Titles include "Soul Meeting", "X Ray ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Modes

Jazz Modes
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+
One of the rarest albums by this fantastic combo from the late 50s! The band features the very strange mix of French horn, tenor, and soulful piano – played by Julius Watkins, Charlie Rouse, and Gildo Mahones, respectively. The sound shouldn't work, but it does, and beautifully – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Double Image
Moon (France), 1969. Near Mint- 2LP
Mind blowing! This is a 2 LP version of a live set from 1969, recorded in Paris with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette. The sound on here is crazy, and goes waaaay out – farther out than anything we've ever heard by Miles. At times, the tracks break down ... LP, Vinyl record album
