We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A collection of older singles by Mildred Bailey – recorded after her years with Paul Whiteman's band, in a laidback bluesy style that was kind of a 30s revival and sweetening of styles used during the big blues boom of the 20s. Mildred's got a heck of a voice, one that's undaunted even by ... LP, Vinyl record album

A rare one from Nina Simone – a set that was issued during her years on RCA, but on the smaller Stroud label – run by husband Andy Stroud! The set's what you'd guess from the title – a tribute to Billie Holiday, but one that's way more than just a copycat of Lady Day's mode ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dinah Shore's definitely got a bouquet of blues here – thanks to some backings that echo the moody, late nite image on the cover! The set's one of Shore's most blue-hued ever – a surprisingly beautiful little record that features orchestrations from Henri Rene, Frank DeVol, and Harry ... LP, Vinyl record album

A set of lovely, beautiful vocals from Jeri – with good natured, brass flavored arrangements by Billy May – excellently done, with a variety of moods from sweet and playful, to grand and romantic. Great stuff! Titles include "Don't Look At Me That Way", "Get Out Of ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest records ever by Jon Hendricks – one of our favorite male jazz singers of all time! The album's an obscure 70s session that features Jon opening up from earlier days – moving into a bit of soul, a bit of funk, yet still keeping things really strong on the jazz tip. ... We love Bobby Troup, and we love records like this that show what a lost link he was in styles of male jazz vocal singing that keep turning up with singers like Harry Connick Jr and some of his contemporaries!
