Jack Teagarden's Big Eight/Pee Wee Russell's Rhythm Makers

LP (Item 612121) Riverside, 1938/1940 — Condition: Sealed
A full length Riverside album that brings together two different sessions from the 78rpm years! Side one features trombonist Jack Teagarden working with an octet that also includes Rex Stewart on cornet, Ben Webster on tenor, and Barney Bigard on clarinet – and side two features clarinet genius Pee Wee Russell working with Freddie Green on guitar, Max Kaminsky on trumpet, Al Gold on tenor, James P Johnson on piano, and Dicky Wells on trombone!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(OJC pressing, still sealed in the perforated outer sleeve with hype stickers & vintage store sticker.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Kenny Drew Trio

Kenny Drew Trio (Riverside)
Riverside, 1956. Near Mint-
Light and tippling magic from pianist Kenny Drew – working here in trio formation with Philly Joe Jones on drums and Paul Chambers on bass, and getting a nice degree of freedom in this early Riverside session! There's a "newness" here that continues the inroads Kenny made on his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk & Gerry Mulligan

Mulligan Meets Monk
Riverside, 1957. Very Good+
An unlikely pair, but a great one here – and the record's one of those few magical moments where bringing together unusual partners actually works! Mulligan's cool hardly seems a match for Monk's angular modernism, but together the players seem to strike a middle ground that resonates with ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great west coast live date from Bill Evans – one that showed that his magic on the keys was equally at home in LA as it was in New York! The session's especially noteworthy for the presence of drummer Larry Bunker – a great player who worked on countless recordings, both jazz and non- ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1957. Near Mint-
Familiar numbers – but done quite nicely, thanks to the warm early talents of Kenny Drew! The style here is a bit more lyrically evocative than some of the other Riverside piano work of the time – less modern-tinged, but still in a really expressive way that unlocks new corners of ... Kenny Dorham

Jazz Contrasts
Riverside, 1957. Near Mint-
Early work by Kenny Dorham as a leader – a Riverside session recorded in two "contrasting" moods that both perfectly show his young talents on the trumpet! Side one is a bit more in a hardbop mode – with two long lyrical tracks ("Falling In Love With Love" and " ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Evans

Interplay Sessions
Riverside/Milestone, 1962/1982. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A real standout in the Bill Evans catalog for Riverside – and that's saying a lot, given how important all of his Riverside albums are! The core session's a rare quintet outing for Evans – one that breaks the mode of the usual trio format by adding in Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Jim ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1961. Near Mint-
One of Bill Evans' landmark sessions with the young bassist Scott LaFaro – a player who made key contributions on every record he touched, then left this earth far too soon in his career! The live session's a perfect demonstration of the way that the Evans trio format not only re-worked the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Philly Joe Jones

Drums Around The World
Riverside, 1959. Very Good
A wonderfully experimental album from drummer Philly Joe Jones – and one that has just the right sort of "ethnic" feel to earn its "Around The World" title! Mostly, the ethnicity comes through in exotic reed work by Sahib Shihab, Herbie Mann, and Cannonball Adderley ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside/Milestone, 1960. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
Two great early 60s albums from Johnny Griffin – back to back in a single set! Maiden Voyage
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

New Perspective
Blue Note, 1963. Near Mint-
