We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Varese, 1958. Very Good+
A Sinbad movie, but one that's put together with a really rich soundtrack – possibly done with more care than the images on the screen for the film! The setting and story are a bit schlocky, but the music is actually classic Herrmann – a very powerful score with loads of dramatic ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Leroy Holmes and orchestra lay down some very groovy instrumental readings of tracks from "new provocative" films from the late 60s – including ones that were Euro trash and American sexploitation flicks, both masquerading under art house guises. Nice moments include Leroy's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cross & The Switchblade
Light, Early 70s. Very Good
One of the strangest chapters in the history of the breakbeat! When this weird soundtrack to a religious film starring Pat Boone came out, who'd have thought that it would become one of the most sought-after soundtracks for hip hoppers. Released on the tiny religious label, Light, the album's a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Johnny Cool
United Artists, 1963. Very Good
Fab jazzy soundtrack from the early 60s! The film's a cool gangster flick that starred Joey Bishop, Jim Backus, Mort Sahl, and Telly Savalas (what a cast!) – and also featured Sammy Davis Jr., who sings two cuts from the score, "The Ballad of Johnny Cool", and the amazing "Bee ... Warner, Late 60s. Very Good
Great work from Earl Hagen – one of TV's better composers, as you'll hear from this tight set of tracks! The core mode of the music is crime jazz, but Hagen also adds in a lot of dramatic flourishes and contemplative passages – and the show's exotic locales (Mexico, Japan, Burma, Hong ... MGM, 1971. Sealed
MGM goes for the Tower/Sidewalk approach – and turns out an album of shlock rock tunes designed to accompany this b-grade biker film from the early 70s! Simon Stokes sings lead vocals on a number of tracks by The Nighthawks – not a bad backing band, save for Simon's "tuff" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sacco E Vanzetti
RCA, 1971. Sealed
An unusual period score by Ennio Morricone – and a record that turned out to be one of his most successful of the 70s! The film, as you might guess from the title, is about the famous and unjust trial of Italian-American activists Sacco & Vanzetti – and in keeping with that setting ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the best-ever Lalo Schifrin LPs! It's got a very cool organ-driven keyboard sound, tight jazzy arrangements, and a great set of themes like "Once a Thief", "The Cat", "The Man From Thrush", and "Blues a Go Go". Very swingin', very cool, and recorded ... LP, Vinyl record album
Zulu (UK pressing)
Ember (UK), 1964. Very Good
Zulu is pulled from a colonial period film that starred Michael Caine, and about half the score is straight orchestral scoring – dramatic music to set the mode of the narrative – but the other half are more African-sounding numbers, handled by Barry with a colonialist zeal! Westworld
MGM, 1973. Near Mint-
A great little movie – with a pretty nice little score! This early Michael Crichton film is quite similar, in overall pacing and theme, to Jurassic Park – but it's much schlockier, as you'd imagine from the time, and from the music on the disc, which is mostly fake "western" ...
