We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Entracte/Southern Cross, 1970/1975. Sealed
A dramatic score by Herrmann – written for this 1970 film about a key battle in WWII. Herrmann directs the London Philharmonic, and the whole thing's very action-packed – less edgey than some of Bernard's more famous scores, but strongly voiced nonetheless. Titles include "Prelude ... A very groovy soundtrack from Dudley Moore! Dud starred in the film, and also came up with some fab music – very much in the vein of his excellent score for the film Bedazzled, which was recorded just a bit before this one. The album has loads of great jazzy groovers – some in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Over the years, how many films have been made about this guy anyway? We've never seen the movie, but the record's a gem – some very edgy scoring by Pete Rugolo, the ex-Kenton arranger who went on to do some great crime jazz work for a number of labels. This work isn't exactly in that style, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic! This is the US release of the Michel Legrand score to Jaques Demy's incredible 1965 film The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg. Every word of dialogue in the film is sung, and Legrand came up with an amazing array of themes to carry the emotion of the film. Embedded in here are lines that later ... LP, Vinyl record album

A beat-era film classic – Andre Previn's jazzy score to the film based on Jack Kerouac's novel The Subterraneans! Previn's working here in a mode that's sometimes lush and emotive, but often more upbeat and jazzy – and performed by a host of great jazz players that include Gerry ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bond goes into space, but Barry stays on the ground – in one of the lesser-remembered James Bond soundtracks of the 70s! The film followed on the Star Wars boom, and had lots of space effects, but Barry keeps things mostly orchestral here – not going for the electronics or sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent soundtrack work by Jerry Goldsmith – possibly his greatest ever! Jerry's usually a bit staid with some of his scores – but working here on the soundtrack to this James Coburn spy spoof film, he's truly fantastic!
