We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Something Fresh
Capitol, Late 60s. Sealed
A rare moment in the David Axelrod years at Capitol Records – a set that has the Axe producing sounds by older maestro David Rose! Rose is a lot groovier in the setting – as you might expect – and all the instrumental tunes are new compositions for the record. Tracks include ... LP, Vinyl record album
Yellow Bird
Hi Fi, Late 50s. Very Good+
Sweet exotic sounds from the Arthur Lyman group – heavy on vibes and lots of hip percussion – recorded with a gently swaying feel that recalls the best energy of the Hawaiian scene in the postwar years! The set's one of Lyman's early solo dates – recorded Henry Kaiser Aluminum ... LP, Vinyl record album
Beat Of The Brass
A&M, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Beautifully compressed pop from Herb Alpert – a session that's still got the traditional Tijuana Brass style, but which also displays a more restrained, more adult approach to instrumental pop! The rhythms are nicely changed out more than before here – stretching out with interwoven ... LP, Vinyl record album
Leis Of Jazz
Hi Fi, 1959. Very Good+
The title's no lie, as the album's a lot jazzier than some of Arthur Lyman's other records – a bit more upbeat, and almost like some vibes-led combo from the LA scene of the 50s! Pianist Alan Soares has a strong role in the set – providing a bit more bite than usual for an Arthur Lyman ... LP, Vinyl record album
Disadvantages Of You
Dunhill, 1967. Near Mint-
A real gem from The Brass Ring – and an album that has a goofy cover designed to recall the famous TV commercial that used the title hit! The record itself is a work of pure genius – tightly compressed easy instrumentals, all in that unique Brass Ring mode – a sound that's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Black Mass
Uni, 1971. Very Good+
This is one of Mort Garson's craziest moog records ever, or as the label says: "Moog Goes Supernatural with Eerie Electronics". Ostensibly a satanic sort of thing, this is actually a wild cool mix of moog and early synthesizer effects, over a bunch of original compositions with no sorts ... LP, Vinyl record album
Subliminal Sounds
ABC, Late 50s. Very Good
While not exactly "subliminal", this one's a nice set of moody instrumental tracks, played by Leo Diamond in the same spooky harmonica style that he used for his Skin Diver Suite. Unlike other harmonicists, like The Harmonicats, Diamond doesn't use the instrument for a lot of goofy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Open Circuit
London, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Excellent bit of moogy stuff by one of the best French players of the instrument (and there were quite a few of them!) Denjean runs through a set that includes one original ("Ce Jour La") and a number of groovy covers, like "Tight Rope", "Love Story", "Alone ... LP, Vinyl record album
Dawn Of Dylan
GWP, Early 70s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Hugo Montenegro runs through a set of Dylan compositions with very baroque orchestrations. Recorded slightly before he was doing his moogy work, this one has Montenegro leading a vocal chorus that has a We Five sort of late 60's pop feel. The arrangements are very groovy and jangly, and the track ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1969. Near Mint-
Debut has Henry Mancini making his debut as a conductor of the Philadelphia Pops – a larger orchestra than you'll usually hear on most Manini albums, which allows Hank to really open up in some more sophisticated modes! The songs are mostly more serious Mancini compositions – with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Beachparty 3
Polydor (Germany), Early 70s. Very Good
A sunny sort of groove party from German Maestro James Last! Last had already been turning out lots of instrumental pop for the German scene in the 60s – but he reinvented his sound a bit with these classic Beachparty records from the early 70s – going for a groove that's upbeat and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Come Together
MGM, Late 60s. Very Good
More big vocal group stuff with hip arrangements, courtesy of Mr. Curb. This is mostly covers, with a lot of hip Beatles-ish stuff, some in medleys, like "Come Together/Hey Jude", "Sweet Caroline/Arizona", and "Suspicious Minds/Midnight Special" – plus the ... LP, Vinyl record album
