(Stereo pressing. Cover has a small cutout hole and notes in marker on front.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mellow Madness
A&M, 1973. Very Good+
A really great, oft-overlooked album from the best period of Quincy Jones! This album is quite possibly Quincy's most farthest-reaching – as he works in an array of styles that really shows his growing genius in the studio – not just jazz and soundtrack modes, but more soul-based ones, ... Somethin' Sanctified
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good
Sanctified, indeed – and just the kind of record to show why Slide Hampton was unlike any of his trombone-playing contemporaries! The set's got a tightness and punch that's really unique – not the compact quality of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, but also not the hardbop of Curtis Fuller ... LP, Vinyl record album

CTI, 1976. Very Good Gatefold
Smooth and silky jazz funk from trombonist Urbie Green – a record that's much more in a mainstream R&B fusion mode than his earlier work – yet also arranged by David Matthews in a soulful style that still keeps things pretty real on the best cuts! The group's a good one for the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Manhattan Project
Beehive, 1978. Sealed
Excellent later work from trumpeter Dizzy Reece – best known for his classic late 50s sides on Blue Note and New Jazz, but heard here as part of a great flurry of 70s revival sessions! The work's got an arch modern tone that's really surprising – almost a bit like Ted Curson at times, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mainstream, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
A nice bit of work from the lost soul jazz sax talent Paul Jeffrey! You may have seen some Paul Jeffrey records out there, and he did record a few with more than a nod towards the funky side of soul jazz, but this is a pretty straight ahead session, with a fairly large group under the supervision ... Time Has Changed
LC, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
Getting up there in years, and Groove Merchant has given way to Sonny Lester's LC label – but O'Donel is still a dope guitar player, and this LP has some tasty cuts like "Butta", which may be the first time the dairy product was used on a record to signify dopeness! The groove is ... LP, Vinyl record album
Solid
Blue Note, 1964. Sealed
An excellent set by Grant Green – recorded in 1964, but not issued until close to 1980, when Blue Note first pulled it out of the vaults, and dropped it on the world! The session's a great one – with an unusual lineup that features Green's guitar in a sextet, with McCoy Tyner on piano, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo, 1977. Near Mint-
A wicked bit of 70s funky fusion from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded with his old piano player from the 60s, Lalo Schifrin! Lalo arranged, conducted, and plays plenty of keyboards – giving the album a wicked groove that's a bit different than some of Dizzy's other 70s work – a bit ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, 1957. Very Good
One of those obscure sessions recorded during the years after the time Blakey and Horace Silver broke up, and before he reestablished himself as a key leader on Blue Note during 1958. A great return to form for guitarist Sal Salvador – a player who didn't always get that much time in the spotlight in the 70s, until a big wave of fresh exposure from the Beehive label!
