We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Island, 1970s. Very Good Gatefold
One of the best-selling albums ever from Bob Marley – a classic collection of work from his all-too-short career – and one that's gone onto become as famous as Marley's individual records themselves! The collection really allows all the classics to resonate strongly, in a track order ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great self produced album from Jimmy Cliff – very soulful, but with a rootsy political edge you might not expect from a pop reggae star like Cliff. Like some of the other groups that were beginning to gain notice in the late 70s and early 80s, Chalice were not only self contained and self produced, but moved easily between a more accessible style of roots and soulful lovers rock, giving them wide appeal that oddly never really extended outside ... A great late 70s album from former Wailer Tosh, to our ears a good bit better than Bush Doctor, the set that had preceded it. We're guessing that has a lot to do with the smoking Word, Sound & Power band Tosh recruited to deliver the chugging riddims underneath his militant lyrics, which ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mid 80s record from the great Jimmy Cliff. While he was in his prime in the early 70s, this much later commercial effort shows he's still got the skills to pay the bills, and we actually kind of like the sound of him singing over the glossy crossover-attempt tracks, which have that great 80s Sly ... Marcia Griffiths at the height of her powers – singing wonderfully and soulfully, in a style that almost transcends her Jamaican roots!
