USA/European Connection

LP (Item 610360) Marlin/TK, 1979 — Condition: Near Mint-
Soaring disco grooves from the legendary Boris Midney – a set that was virtually built by Midney from the ground up – layering instruments over a funky club beat, then forming the grooves into songs in the process! The result is superb studio work from the height of the disco generation – a great illustration of the way that Boris used the studio as musicians might use an instrument – both to create and compose, always with an eye on the end result that would be pressed up on record! Tracks are long, and virtually work together as one extended number – and titles include "I'd Like To Get Closer", "Do Me Good", "Join The Dance", and "There's A Way Into My Heart".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Marlin, 1978. Near Mint-
A classic album of stripped-down disco grooves – featuring spacey keyboard work from Boris Midney, and lots of heavy congas by Larry Washington! The real focus here is the instrumental work – those long, stretched-out grooves that seemed to be the trademark of the Miami scene in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Voyage

Fly Away
Marlin, 1978. Sealed
The second US album from Euro disco outfit Voyage – a group who manage to bring in some nice progressive and jazzy elements to the mix! There's almost a jamming rock-gone-disco approach to a few of the best numbers – thanks to a strong use of heavy guitars and keyboards, and a real ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ralph MacDonald

Counterpoint
Marlin, 1979. Near Mint-
Maybe one of the most soul-based records ever from percussionist Ralph MacDonald – partly because Ralph does a bit of singing, in addition to playing the heavy congas on the cover! Yet the record's still got the core jazz vibe of his other sets from the late 70s – served up with an all- ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ritchie Family

American Generation
Marlin, 1978. Near Mint-
Titles include "Big Spender", "Good In Love", "Music Man", "American Generation", and "I Feel Disco Good". Composed and produced by Jacques Morali, too! LP, Vinyl record album

Ralph MacDonald

Path
Marlin, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of percussionist Ralph MacDonald's best albums of the late 70s – and one of the few on his own, given how many other records he played on! The set's a complicated mix of jazz, soul, and a variety of rootsier elements – and MacDonald shows a lot of sides of his personality here ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good+
The best of two self-titled albums by this hip LA vocal quartet – recorded for Blue Note with arrangements by Jerry Peters, and jazzy soul style that reminds us a bit of Creative Source on their third or forth LPs. The group were heavily in demand as backup singers on studio sessions – ... LP, Vinyl record album
A&M/CTI, 1968. Sealed
Fantastic work from Tamiko Jones – one of the more enigmatic soul singers of her generation! Originals

Game Called Love
Motown, 1974. Near Mint-
Kind of a confused effort by The Originals – with a mix of styles that has the band running through material that includes some mellow countrified soul, plus sweeter ballads that are more in line with the group's better work. Arrangements are by Stevie Wonder, Paul Riser, James Carmichael, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tower Of Power

Urban Renewal
Warner, 1974. Near Mint-
One of the best early albums from Tower Of Power – with kind of a funky choppy groove that feels like a San Francisco version of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, riffing away in a stoner funk mode that always sounds like it might go off slightly, but which always wobbles back on course. ... Jose Feliciano

Alive Alive O!
RCA, 1969. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A beautiful little live album from Jose Feliciano – recorded in London at the end of the 60s, with a sound that's often more stripped down than his studio work of the time! Jose's on vocals and guitar, backed by only a bit of bass and percussion – so the record's almost got the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jermaine Jackson

Feel The Fire
Motown, 1977. Near Mint-
Jermaine's going the way of most of Motown at this point – popping the bass pretty heavily, and grooving in a smooth funky mode. The cuts that go too over the top with the funky stuff definitely lose us – but there's a few decent mellow soul tracks that redeem the album, and which keep ... LP, Vinyl record album
