Mahogany

LP (Item 61000) Motown, 1975 — Condition: Very Good+
One of Diana's big cinematic moments of the 70s – and a record that's better than we remember! The theme of the film – "Mahogany" – was covered so many times during the 70s that it's easy to forget how great it is – a sad, slow tune with a meandering vocal that's quite different from most of Diana's other work at the time. The rest of the album's pretty great too – all instrumental and handled by Gil Askey with some pretty cool arrangements that groove in a style that's almost baroque easy meets blacksploitation. There's a few really great tracks with a nice complicated funky feel – and titles include "My Hero Is A Gun", "feeling Again", "Can You Hear It In My Music", "Tracy", "She's The Ideal Girl", and "Mahogany Suite".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout hole, light wear, and aging.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Diana Ross in the sweet clubby 70s – working here in a set of upbeat groovers that really show off her talents as a disco diva! Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross

Diana & Marvin
Motown, 1973. Near Mint-
A surprisingly nice album – even if you're not a fan of Diana Ross! Given that Marvin and Diana are standing back to back on the front cover, we kind of get the idea that there wasn't as much sympathy in the session as on some of Marvin's classic duet sides from the 60s with Tammi Terrell ... In My Stride
Motown, 1977. Very Good+
Later Motown work from David Ruffin, but still pretty darn great – thanks to vocals that rise to the top, no matter what the tune! Motown, 1985. Very Good+
A stone classic from that great early 80s run by DeBarge – that time when they were really reinventing the group soul sound for a new generation, finding a way to bring back older sweet soul modes, but with a very different twist! Life & Breath
Janus, 1972. Very Good+
One of their best LPs from the early 70's, back when they were less uptempo, and still focusing on good group harmony cuts that had more of a traditional mix of ballads and midtempo tracks. The LP includes a nice moody cover of "Speak Softly Love", plus "Here Comes Tomorrow", ... LP, Vinyl record album
World Pacific, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
A sweet album of funky guitar tracks, with Freddy Robinson out front over a bunch of tight LA Monk Higgins arrangements.
