Best Of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross (aka The Hottest New Group In Jazz)

LP (Item 60884) Columbia, Late 50s — Condition: Very Good+
How can we even begin to describe the genius of Lambert Hendricks and Ross? The group was a jazz vocal supergroup that merged three talents that had already made a big name in the bebop vocalese field – Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and the lovely Annie Ross – and the project was an attempt to completely work the emerging vocalese style onto a full-blown jazz group. This album wasn't their first – but it was the first to really break them with the masses, and it's a vocal jazz classic if there ever was one. Backings are by the Ike Isaacs Trio, plus Harry Edison on trumpet – and titles include "Moanin", "Twisted", "Cloudburst", "Everybody's Boppin", and "Sermonette". 70s version of the group's first album for Columbia – Hottest New Group In Jazz – but works fine as a best of!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lambert, Hendricks & Ross

Swingers!
World Pacific, 1958. Near Mint-
One of the rarest albums ever recorded by the hiply swinging vocal trio of Jon Hendricks, Dave Lambert, and Annie Ross – a live session from 1958, with backing by a group that includes Zoot Sims, Russ Freeman, and Jim Hall. The feel here is really wonderful – a lot less hokey than on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lambert, Hendricks & Ross

Sing A Song Of Basie (ABC pressing)
ABC, 1958. Very Good+
One of the first albums ever by this legendary jazz vocal group! LHR do the incredible – and create a set of vocal renditions of standards by the Basie band, putting jazzy lyrics in to replace the instrumental solos, but keeping the same vibe as the original tracks. The sound and approach ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1955. Very Good+
One of our favorite vocal albums of the 50s – an incredibly witty live set from Noel Coward, recorded in Las Vegas, with a very different style than some of his other records! The Noel Coward you'll hear here is still steeped in the mannered wit of his earlier plays, but he's also let ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1958. Very Good+
A bittersweet set of vocals from Polly Bergen – recorded with a sound that really fits her sad-eyed look on the cover! Although Bergen's voice is sometimes confident and full, it's nicely restrained here – often somewhat dark-toned and moody – in ways that remind us of Morgana ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah Vaughan

After Hours (Columbia)
Columbia, Early 50s. Very Good
The album that really put Sarah Vaughan on the map – a killer set that really showed how sultry jazz vocals could sound in the postwar years – never overtone, nor torchy-cliched – but right on the money, with a sense of grace and poise that few others can match – even after ... Aldemaro Romero/Charlie Byrd

Onda Nueva – New Wave
Columbia, 1971. Sealed
A swirling batch of easy groovers – the light and lively orchestrations of Aldemaro Romero, augmented by lead guitar from Charlie Byrd! Oscar Brown Jr.

Between Heaven & Hell
Columbia, 1962. Very Good+
Great early work from Oscar Brown Jr – a hip mix of jazz and soul, working in Brown's unique sense of showmanship, and his almost beat-like flair with a lyric! Ralph Burns and Quincy Jones handled the arrangements – and the album's filled with great original tracks by Brown, including ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1956. Very Good+
A very cool album from Noel Coward – a talent you're probably more familiar with as a playwright, but who also happens to be quite the entertainer! This album is one of two great sets that Coward recorded live in the US in the mid 50s, and they really show him opening up a lot from earlier ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good+
An overlooked gem from Joe Mooney – a singer/pianist best known from the 50s, but who works here with some sweet Hammond as well! The group's a nice one – with Mundell Lowe on guitar, Joe Venuto on vibes, and Jerry Dodgion on flute – and tracks include "Cute", "When ... LP, Vinyl record album

Carol Sloane

Out Of The Blue
Columbia, 1961. Very Good-
A beautiful little record from singer Carol Sloane – a singer who's billed as a discovery from the Newport Jazz Festival – but who sings here with shimmeringly modern arrangements that recall some of June Christy's best 50s work with arranger Pete Rugolo! The force behind the backings ... LP, Vinyl record album
