We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Freak Out
Verve, 1966. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
A fabulous furry freakout from Frank Zappa – the start of a legendary run in the late 60s – and a record that is still as mindblowing now as it was all those many years back! There's a deadpan quality to the vocals that's unlike anything other groups were trying for at the time – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Absolutely Free
Verve, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the most mindblowing pop culture pastiches of the 60s – a record that's as absolutely mad as it is absolutely free – and proof that a whole new generation of musicians like Zappa were using the studio like an instrument itself! This is work that could have never existed away ... LP, Vinyl record album
Same People
Dunhill, 1970. Near Mint-
Brassy jazzy hard and tight little tracks from this blue-eyed southern soul brother – with production by the great Huey P Meux. The album's core is a rocking southern sound, but there are definitely more soul elements here – and the heavy drums on the set make it super nice and funky! ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mountain Live
Windfall, 1972. Very Good-
Sure, Mountain's a rock group by most accounts – and that's where you'll find most of their records in the record store. But from our end, this album always shows up in the crates of hip DJs from way back – clearly for the massive breakbeat classic "Long Red", a monster ... LP, Vinyl record album

Philips (UK), Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
That's right – you're not dreaming – this is a rare Scott Walker album, never reissued on CD! The album features Scott singing a number of standards and pop covers, the sort of fare that he laid down on his short-lived TV show in the late 60s. The tunes aren't exactly the same as ... Incense & Peppermints
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good+
Dreamy dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! This album's got a lot more to offer than you might guess from just the title hit – as the instrumentation sometimes gets nicely tripped out ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mass In F Minor
Reprise, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A beautifully baroque batch of tracks, written and arranged for the Electric Prunes by the great David Axelrod – a really groundbreaking mix of modes that had quite an impact back in the late 60s! The record shows Axelrod's perpetual fascination with the spiritual – mixed with that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Includes the tracks "Light the Road", "The Immigrant", "I'll Go Blind", and "The I Ching Thing". Produced by Teo Macero – with lots of great horns! LP, Vinyl record album
Fourth (4)
Columbia, 1970. Very Good+
An almost all-jazz release by Soft Machine – and a tasty bit of proggish tunes with a spare electric modal groove. Robert Wyatt's still on drums, and the rest of the group features Hugh Hopper on bass, Mike Ratledge on organ and piano, and Elton Dean on saxes. Titles include "Teeth" ...
