I Want It To Be Real (vocal, inst)/Englishman In New York

12-inch (Item 60764) Streetwise, 1984 — Condition: Very Good
(pic cover)
(€4.06 || £3.56 || ¥550) (approx.)

Classic electro from the team of John Rocca and Arthur Baker, one that really takes us back. A bit of on the pop side of things, but still some great early linn drum grooves. (Vinyl has a mark that clicks on "Englishman In New York".)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Streetwise, 1982. Very Good
An electro pop classic – and one of the greatest tunes by New Edition! The track's got some nice street beats from Arthur Baker, and catchy lead vocals that sound a lot like the Jackson 5 at their best! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Streetwise, 1984. Very Good (pic cover)
Loleatta's working here with Arthur Baker – changing her style considerably to fit his slick little electro beats on the blaster and master mixes! The single also features a mellower number in her older southern style – "Sweet Thing", which is a great late night cut. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Vinyl Dreams, 1984. Very Good+
One of the most soulful club tracks we can remember from the mid 80s – and a cut with a hook that just won't quit! 12-inch, Vinyl record
T Neck, 1982. Very Good-
An excellent single, featuring one of the group's best late tracks! "We Go A Long Way Back" is a smooth modern soul stepper – with a compressed harmony hook that's great, and a warm soul feel that's a lot more 70s sounding than some of the band's other output at the time! 12-inch, Vinyl record

... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Atlantic/RFC, 1981. Very Good-
A pretty catchy groover from Suzy Q – slightly cold, with a thumping dancefloor groove that's got some nice European touches! A bit quirky, but with a stomping approach that's compelling. 12-inch, Vinyl record
In Search Of (5:31, 3:44)
AVI, 1976. Very Good+ (pic cover)
A strange but nice single! This one features the theme to the 70s TV special In Search Of – often concerned with tracking down unusual events and strange phenomena, in a kind of Chariots Of The Gods mode. The tune has a sweet disco TV groove – soaring along with a nice mix of strings, ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Mercury, 1987. Near Mint-
Probably the group's biggest hit, a tune that got play in many fields at the time! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Capitol, 1982. Very Good-
2 tracks from the group's second album on Capitol – almost as nice as the first! "Imagination" follows very much in the territory of their hit "On The Beat" – stepping around the dancefloor with a very strong 80s groove that never gets too gimmicky or flat. "Ha ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Chaz Ro, 1981. Very Good-
A slammin 80s groover from Weeks & Co – one of their best early cuts! The track cooks up the groove like a monster roller skating jam – using bass, keys, and a snapping approach to grab us right away – before the chanting chorus and main vocals come into the mix – and ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Salsoul, 1981. Very Good+
Seminal 80s groove from one of the best second-generation acts on Salsoul! "Make Up Your Mind" is a catchy snapping track that wonderfully blends the electric and the soulful – with a heavy groove that just won't quit! 12-inch, Vinyl record
