We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Great grooviness from Neal Hefti – working here at the height of his 60s powers! The film stars Robert Morse, Barbara Harris, and Jonathan Winters – and the score's got a 60s screwball approach that mixes organ, woodwinds, percussion, and bits of strings together, all filtered through ... Fantastic! This great Burt Bacharach score to an obscure film has some of his most fantastic orchestrations ever. The sound is cool, breezy, and with some amazing changes that make you gasp anew at his genius. Dionne Warwick sings on some tracks, and it's nice to hear her do material that you're ... A nice one by Quincy! Although the material here isn't funky like his 70's work, it does show Quincy as a strong composer of serious thriller-type material – working in a style that produces a nice amount of tension and mood, and which still has some nice touches of jazz. The group is ... LP, Vinyl record album

United Artists, 1970. Very Good
A really wild soundtrack to a really wild film – a movie set in pagan Rome, and one of the most offbeat Fellini films to ever hit the screen – which is quite a lot, given the director's other oeuvre! Nino Rota really steps up with his soundtrack here – and breaks the mold of his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Peter Schickele – aka PDQ Bach – did the soundtrack for this creepy early 70s space thriller, and it's a lot different than most of the work he did under his more famous pseudonym. Most tracks are spare and spooky – with some off-kilter strings that give a bit of a spacey feel, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1964. Very Good-
A short score for this 1964 Fellini film – with a set of themes as carnivalesque as you might imagine from the title! The score is divided up into 2 long segments – each around 15 minutes in length – which are then classified by subdivided segments that run into one another, with ... LP, Vinyl record album

United Artists, 1970. Very Good
As you can probably guess, the Al Kooper vocal tracks on this album aren't the greatest – unless you dig Al's proto-bluesy-soulful rock style. But there are some great instrumental tunes played by Al and The Landlords – a group that includes Eric Gale, Chuck Rainey, Joe Farrell, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

A really great soundtrack from Gruff Rhys – a set that's maybe even more personal and beautiful than some of his more familiar records on his own! The music's for a film about the first week that poet Dylan Thomas spent in America in the 50s – but the sound is quite different from any ... LP, Vinyl record album

A score that's arguably much better than the movie it was written for – a great Ennio Morricone moment for a 70s thriller that starred Rock Hudson! Morricone's a bit restrained, but in a way that's pretty nice – making for some lighter orchestral numbers that offset the darker mood of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Despite the fact that Sophia Loren's name is prominently displayed on the cover, and despite the fact that she's pictured on the front, most of the record is instrumental work by Barry – although there is a vocal track or two by Loren! The sound is pretty groovy, and the tracks have a nice ... LP, Vinyl record album

The US release of 3 soundtracks to films produced by Dino De Laurentis – the best of which is Roy Budd's Stone Killer.
