We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

From Dakota With Love
United Artists, Mid 60s. Very Good+
An unusual one from Dakota Staton – and almost a bit more bluesy than some of her Capitol sessions! Titles include "Supper Time", "I Stood By", "I Gotta Go", "Hurry Home", and "My Search Is Over". LP, Vinyl record album

United Artists, Mid 60s. Sealed
Obscure late 60's pop stuff by this intellectual young man of song – not exactly Scott Walker, but not too bad either! With a nice version of John Barry's "The Knack", plus "Taste of Honey", "I've Just Seen a Face", and the original "When That I Was (A Tiny ... LP, Vinyl record album

Porgy & Bess
United Artists, 1959. Very Good
A sultry set of vocals – Diahann backed by the Andre Previn Trio, running through mellow versions of tracks from Gershwin's Porgy & Bess. Although this was one of countless albums to come out in the late 50s, designed to coincide with the release of the film, the feeling here is quite ... LP, Vinyl record album

United Artists, 1959. Very Good
Although she later lost all connection to jazz singing, in this early record, Diahann Carroll does a ok job with a batch of standards and pop material, conducted by Peter Matz, in his years before Barbara Streisand. The album's reaching for that same sort of classy sound, but thankfully has a lot ... LP, Vinyl record album

United Artists, 1960. Very Good+
Quite possibly the only full album ever recorded as a solo act by Dave Lambert, the vocalist that we know and love from the team of Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – but who's also a heck of a great singer on his own! As you may know from the group, Dave's got a slightly quirky vocal approach ... LP, Vinyl record album

After Midnight
Capitol, 1956. Very Good-
A great album, and one in which Nat King Cole returns to his roots as a jazz singer! The session differs greatly from Nat's other schmaltzy ones from the time, and it features a very "after midnight" sound – with Nat playing and singing backed only by a small combo that includes ... Reprise, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A real oddity in the Sammy Davis Jr collection from the 60s – and almost more of a comedy album than a vocal one! The album is subtitled "Sammy Davis Jr Impersonating" – and then lists a range of stars, singers, and actors from the mid 20th century – including Tony ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tiger In The Rain
Warner, 1979. Near Mint-
Another slice of late 70s genius from the amazing Michael Franks – one of the few mainstream artists who was able to hold onto his own voice and course amidst the overwhelming force of the music industry! Tim Hardin 2
Verve, 1967. Very Good-
A beautiful album that inspired lots of other artists from Scott Walker to Leonard Nimoy! Like some of the other albums on the Verve Forecast imprint, this set combines the hip, jazzy Verve aesthetic with parent label MGM's pop sensibilities, which add up to some great settings for Hardin's down ...
