Hand Made

LP (Item 605047) Atlantic, 1973 — Condition: Very Good+
The music's hand made, but the sound is heavily electric – thanks to some great production work that further pushes the spacier sound of the group! As with other Passport records, Klaus Doldinger's working here not just on saxes (which are great), but also on moog, electric piano, and mellotron – a whole second set of keyboards in addition to the work of Frank Roberts on Fender Rhodes and organ – the group's third keyboardist in as many albums, but still a great player who really keeps the spirit of the Passport jazz rock groove strong! Some of the tracks here are a bit more open and atmospheric than before – possibly because of an influence from American keyboard players of the period – but the album's still plenty jamming throughout – often veering towards funk, but mostly going for a rock-inspired fusion mode in the end. Titles include the break number "Puzzle", plus "The Quiet Man", "Abracadabra", "The Connexion", "Yellow Dream", and "Hand Made".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(German pressing. Cover has lightly bent corners and gloss separation around the edges.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Truly one of the Modern Jazz Quartet's greatest albums – and a set that has an edge and a darkness that's missing from some of their other Atlantic records!
