Touch Of The Blues

LP (Item 60346) RCA, 1958 — Condition: Very Good+

Dark and sophisticated vocals from Lee Wiley – cut with a slightly more traditional feel than some of her other albums from the time, partly because the backings are handled by Billy Butterfield! Yet despite a slightly traddish bent, there's also a slightly modern feel too – a nice melding of modes that's very much in the best 50s RCA spirit – fresh and sultry enough to live up to the streetwise image on the cover. Arrangements are by Al Cohn and Bill Finegan, and titles include "Blues In My Heart", "The Memphis Blues", "From The Land Of Sky Blue Water", "A Hundred Years From Today", "Make Believe", "A Touch Of The Blues", and "I Don't Want To Walk Without You".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Black label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lee Wiley

West Of The Moon
RCA, 1956. Near Mint-
A great set of torchy ballads from Lee Wiley – a singer who virtually helped invent the genre on record with her classic sets for Columbia Records! Be Mine Tonight
RCA, 1959. Very Good
Classic 50s work from vocalist Abbe Lane – and a record that's made all the better by some great arrangements from Tito Puente! Joy
RCA, 1970. Very Good+
Oscar Brown's score for a hip play that he wrote (one of his many plays!) – performed by him, Sivuca, and Jean Pace. Here Comes The Sun
RCA, 1971. Very Good-
Classic RCA work from the great Nina Simone – and an album that definitely shows Nina hitting more of the soul spectrum than some of her folk and jazz work of the 60s! Susan Barrett
RCA, 1966. Near Mint-
A lesser-known swinger on the RCA label from the 60s – a vocalist who hearkens back to the imprint's female sessions of the 50s, but who brings in some groovier touches as well! Backings are by Marion Evans, who helps Susan's full vocals find some nice spaces in the tunes – sometimes ... LP, Vinyl record album
