A great one from Fab Trio – and proof that the group may be one of the best outlets for Billy Bang's talents in recent years! There's a spare, lean quality here – free interactions between the group members, but some of the warmth of Bang's more composed projects – a blend that almost takes us back to the Revolutionary Ensemble work of Leroy Jenkins – one of Bang's precursors on his chosen instrument by a few years! The lineup features Billy on violin, playing some really amazing sounds, plus Joe Fonda on bass and Barry Altschul on drums – on titles that include "Chan Chan", "From Here To There", "History Of Jazz In Reverse", "From The Waters Of New Orleans", and "Homeward Bound".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

A quartet with a name that you might not have heard before, but which stands for the first initials of the four great members of the group – Oliver Lake on alto and soprano sax, Graham Haynes on cornet, Joe Fonda on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums, percussion, and mbira! Around Again – The Music Of Carla Bley
Tum (Finland), 2019. Used
A trio take on the music of Carla Bley – and a record that takes us back to a time when Bley's compositions were showing up in the repertoire of the hippest trios of the 60s – long before she ever got the chance to make bigger records on her own! That sense of openness that Bley ... CD

Barry Altschul 3Dom Factor

Tales Of The Unforseen
Tum (Finland), 2015. Used
A tremendous trio outing, and a record that really illustrates the newfound strength we've heard from drummer Barry Altschul in recent years – music so great, it's almost as if he's taken a time machine back to the groundbreaking days of his youth! The play on "freedom" in the trio' ... CD
Sony (Japan), 1982. Used
Blood's groundbreaking LP that gave a name and energy to the 80's Black Rock movement. Recorded post-Ornette, but with a wild sound that certainly shows his influence. Cuts include "Open House", "Black Rock", "Moon Beam", "Overnight", and "We Bop". CD

Freddie Hubbard

Hub Of Hubbard
MPS (Japan), 1969. Used
A classic European date from Freddie Hubbard – recorded right around the vintage of his Red Clay years, but with a sound that hearkens back more towards his Blue Note sessions of the mid 60s! There's a nicely angular feel to this set – that bold, modern quality that really set Hubbard ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1955. Used

Johnathan Blake

Passage
Blue Note, 2023. Used
Really beautiful work from Johnathan Blake – a record that shows just how strongly Blake seems to be finding his voice with each new release! The set's got this richly visionary quality that goes beyond the leader's work on drums – and instead has a unified focus that comes from a ... CD
Limelight/EmArcy, 1959. Used
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city ... CD

Reprise/Rhino, 1990. Used
The final album by The Replacements – and a nice one, even if it's closer to a debut solo album for Paul Westerberg than it is to the rest of the 'Mats ouvre! This is a classic example of an album with strengths we either refused to acknowledge back in the day as Replacements classicists, or ... CD
