We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Air Mail Special
Clef, Mid 50s. Very Good
One of the standout gems from Lionel Hampton's 50s sessions for Verve – wonderful small combo recordings that let Hamp stretch out in freer solo space than usual! Although the Hampton fame always lay in his popularly-touring bigger band, and all its related pyrotechnics, we've always loved ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hamp!
Clef, Mid 50s. Good
One of Hamp's jazz sides for Verve, all of which were a lot different than the hard live sets he was still laying down around the world in the 50's. This one's a nice laid-back bit of jazz, with long tracks that let all the players – Hamp, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and Buddy Rich – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brunswick, 1972. Near Mint-
A great little set of instrumental tracks from Lionel Hampton – almost more soul than jazz, and set to some hipper than usual Brunswick Records arrangements – by the likes of Eugene Record, Willie Henderson, Sonny Sanders, and Hamilton Bohannon! Presenting Burton Greene
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good
One of the biggest albums ever from pianist Burton Greene – a set that also features the great Byard Lancaster on alto and trumpet, and which mixes in some hip electronic harpsichord as well – all in a mode that's wonderfully trippy and spellbinding! Tracks include "Nirvana ... LP, Vinyl record album

Discovery!
Columbia, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A wonderful bit of soul jazz – much less trippy than some of Charles Lloyd's later work, and handled with a soulful flair that's a mix of Coltrane spiritualism, with an even larger dose of the sort of post-Trane experiments in jazz that would crop up during the early 70s on smaller ...
