We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Columbia, 1971. Very Good+ 4LP Box Set
An incredible early project from Chicago – a quadruple-length live set, one that shows the group at the full height of their instrumental powers! The package has some great versions of classics, with a slightly different bent – and plenty of room for the ensemble to open up beautifully. LP, Vinyl record album

Friends
Capitol, 1968. Very Good-
An under-discovered album from The Beach Boys – and one of our favorite records by the group! The set's kind of a slinking back to the personal, quirky territory of Smile, but with a somewhat more intimate, less-ambitious feel – one that comes off like a tapestry of simple expressions ... Silver Apples
Kapp, 1968. Good+
A groundbreaking set from The Silver Apples – one of those records that almost didn't get fully appreciated until many decades later! The sound here is quite unique, even for the late 60s psych rock underground – and The Apples work in a blend of spacey electronics, driving percussion, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Same People
Dunhill, 1970. Very Good
Brassy jazzy hard and tight little tracks from this blue-eyed southern soul brother – with production by the great Huey P Meux. The album's core is a rocking southern sound, but there are definitely more soul elements here – and the heavy drums on the set make it super nice and funky! ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ampex, 1970. Sealed
Todd Rundgren in all of his great early glory – a record that's filled with simple, honest pop tunes – and one that also takes on a few experimental touches as well – but only in ways that further the earnest charm at its heart! There's a really upfront, unpretentious feel to the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Beacon From Mars
Epic, Late 60s. Near Mint- (reissue)
A psychedelic nugget from the1968 – and one of the few rare albums by the obscure Bay Area rockers Kaleidoscope – and the second of their twin late 60s masterpieces for Epic Records! Beacon From Mars indeed has its spacey charms, but the band name is a more apt description for their ... LP, Vinyl record album
Red Weather
Philips, 1970. Very Good+
The first solo album from then recently departed Blue Cheer guitarist Leigh Stephens – and a great one! Greatest Hits
ABC, 1970s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
We've always considered Steely Dan one of the quintessential 70s "Album Oriented Rock" bands, in that all of there albums work so well as a whole, so the idea of a greatest hits collection doesn't exactly work for us. Still, taken out of context, these songs are still gems, and listening ... LP, Vinyl record album
Peaceful World
Columbia, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Nothing too peaceful here – at least not in a sleepy sort of way – as The Rascals are really hitting on all burners, and starting to mix a bit of funk in with their groove! The record's a great extension of the group's last work on Atlantic – and it takes that already-righteous ... LP, Vinyl record album
