20th Century Piano Genius

LP (Item 600190) EmArcy, 1955 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
A tremendous collection of work by Art Tatum – maybe even THE collection of work by Art Tatum – complete and unedited "Piano Discoveries" sessions recorded in a private home by Ray Heindorf in Hollywood late in his career, but at a time when he was even more inventive than ever!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mid 80s Emarcy Jazz Series issue. Cover has some ringwear, some light wrinkling at the bottom seams with a stuck gatefold, and some stuck-on paper at the bottom edge in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cannonball Adderley

Lush Side Of Cannonball
EmArcy, Late 50s. Very Good+
A wonderfully mellow set of ballads recorded by Cannonball, with orchestral backings by Richard Hayman. The album's typical of the kind of "all over the map" approach that Mercury used during Cannon's early years – before he'd settled down into the one-man soul jazz factory he ... Lenny Niehaus

I Swing For You
EmArcy, 1957. Near Mint-
Lennie swings, but he keeps it cool too – as this rare Mercury set steps off of the same octet energy Niehaus brought to his better-known sides for Contemporary in the mid 50s! Bean (10 inch LP)
EmArcy, Early 40s. Very Good
A 50s collection of material cut by Coleman Hawkins in the early 40s – working with a wonderful small combo that includes Teddy Wilson on piano and either Roy Eldridge or Buck Clayton on trumpet! EmArcy, 1955. Very Good+
One of the more enigmatic of Lars Gullin's mid 50s American albums – a session that features the master baritonist blowing alongside the Moretone Singers – a vocal ensemble who sings in cascading tones that kind of shade and color the background. Paul Quinichette

Moods
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good
Perhaps the best-known (and arguably the best) record by Paul Quinchette, and an album that brings his rich tenor solo style into contact with a very tight, very swinging batch of arrangments by a young Quincy Jones. Quincy's got an all-star batch of players backing up Q, including Sam Most, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1964. Very Good
One of Stanley Turrentine's few organ-based sessions for Blue Note – recorded in the company of his wife Shirley Scott, a real cooker on the Hammond who holds it down masterfully here – and great band that's filled out by Kenny Burrell on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Otis Finch on ...
